I just found a 1979 scout 11 with a V8 . my boss wants 300 bucks for it.
The body is pretty strait, needs work to be show quality, but i just want another toy for playing in the dirt.
It doesn't have any keys, and its going to be a lean sale.
but i can work with the both of those..
I attempted to start/crank it. I put a known good battery in it, and didn't get anything. The ignition turned into the start position, but I didn't get any gauge activity, buzzers, nothing showing anything had any power.
any ideas on why? I know for a fact that the cables were going to where they needed to, everything "looks" like it is where it needs to go. I know that doesn't really mean anything. believe it or not I actually have a bit of mechanical knowledge, I just don't know where to start of the scout.

I was strongly considering swapping a set of full size axles I have laying around. That got me thinking about throwing the 350, sm465 and 205 into it as well. I doubt I would put the sm465 trans into it just because It is currently an automatic, and I want something that the wife would be comfortable driving. I like the idea of the SBC because its what i know, parts are abundant, and not too hard to get decent power out of them.

so what do you guys recommend? should I attempt to get the old and original v8 running, or should I attempt the swap? do you guys have any recommendations on where to start to get power again?

I hope I'm not boring anyone. Thanks in advance guys,
Jason

#1: Buy a red star to enable the Search feature here.

#2: Search "gold box", "SOA", "SBC"

#3: Bust ass to finish in a timely manner.

#4: Get lots of shit here...because its good motivation.

Do the headlights come on? I would stick with the stock drivetrain unless it has major problems. Like a shot engine or blown transmission.

Go here (http://www.binderbulletin.org) or here (http://www.justih.org/). Do the following: Search & Read, search & read, search & read, search & read, search & read, and then search & read some more.
Come back in a year or two when you know whats what.

They are just bustin your ass to break you in since you are new. Try to have some thick skin and work your way through this. Most of the guys on here are pretty nice when it comes down to it.

They are just tired of questions that can be answered on the Binder Bulletin, or by searching. Try and get the IH mill running and see where it goes from there. Anyhow welcome:D

This isnt tech, just basic trouble shooting. We dont need to post it. Get a test light and a diagram.

First off, don't swap GM drivetrain. Why swap in a motor that will maybe last 150K miles on a good day while I have had 7 IH's well over 300K without a one rebuild. I still have 3 of them. There's a reason why there's a DUMP TRUCK motor in a Scout. They are unstoppable. That's all of the E-Beef I'm gonna dish out.

Another suggestion, do a remote start solenoid install:

BTW, it's a Scout II (2) not a Scout 11. Just for future referance.

Well, in my many years of being in IH threads, I have seen some people get really offended by that. I'd have to say OldICH is the worst for that. Just letting him know if he decides to veture from this forum.

Hey skidmark, take it from another noob. They like the new tight ass around here, and get all worked up. Your best info can be found on this board. Go to the noob section and learn how to search without a red star. It will take a little reading to find it, but we'll assume that you can read.:flipoff2:

They like Scout II's and square body Travellals, they just have to be stock and restored back to factory. Mention the word "lift" and you are run out of town.
