: Driveline out of phase

What is an acceptable amount that a driveshaft can be out of phase? I added some length to my shaft and when I pressed the ends in they went out of phase about 3/16's of an inch. Will I do damage if I run this shaft for the weekend and fix it later or am I screwed. I don't have time to repair the shaft before the run so I am hoping that the worst that will happen is a bad u-joint. Anyone have a clus about this. Come Awn Jesse share your wisdom.
Thanks
JOe

depends.. does it shake.. having it out phase will hurt it in the long run.. because it not wanting to balance.... A few older trans ams. had a drivline with the yokes not lines up.. never did find out the reason.. but if its for the weekend.. run it

I had the same thing. I made a driveline and was so excited to go wheeling I didnt notice that it was a little out of phase until after i welded it. I did shake a little under a light load but I only ran it for one trip.

My vote is to run it.

Doesn't it have a splined slip-shaft so you could just remove the shaft, turn it a spline or two and put it back in???

Am I missing something here?

Um Yeah... I thought about that and it is worse on the other splines. It isn't enough to turn the spline but just enough to notice.

Yeah, the spline is definitely too coarse. I just shortened my rear shaft for my shorter wheel base. Same thing happened, got it all lined up, measured ready to weld and thought, "check twice!". Went back over everything and realized it had not gone in straight, shifted off just enough to see eye-balling from one end to the other. Thought about it for a couple of seconds and just decided to drive it out and fix it. Luckily I caught it before welding. If I hadn’t, I would probably at least give it a whirl to see how it does before cutting it loose again. May be ok. Like you suggested, I’m sure Jess can give you a better idea.

I "fixed" a shaft as a trail repair and it ended up out of phase at least that bad. Wheeled on it the rest of the weekend and drove it 300 miles home. Did get a vibration around 60, but if I feathered the gas and coaxed it faster it went away. Still carry that one as a trail spare.

I say run it... worse that can happen is you toast a u-joint.

Well that settles it. I am gonna go give it hell on Fordyce this weekend, and then fix it later. It's the front so the worst that can happen is I toast a u-joint or two but that is an easy fix. Have a good one all

One more thing to try, take it apart and turn one end 180 and see if it is closer.

bring about a 24" bar saw and wedges or you won't get far. I haven't heard anything about people going through yet

Actually, I'm sure he's dead serious, and I'd give it a try if I were you, because he's right on. If you have an odd number of slip splines, you might be able to get it closer by pulling the slip joint apart, and rotating one end 180° and reassembling, so it's still in phase, but might be closer. TRY IT, you'll see what we mean.

THEN DON'T DO THE MATH!  ;)

Rover driveshafts are 45 degrees out of phase from the factory.

I forget the whole reason but its true. I always wondered if it might help other driveshafts to try different positions.

FWIW

wow hit this one late sorry- some rigs are 22 degree's out of phase - and some are more factory it all has to do with what angles are being cancelled at what rate - becuase the shaft occelates and needs to cancel the angles at about the same rate this is the need to be with in 3 degree's of phase- but think about this im my opionion balancing your shaft is a more pressing problem unless you are way out like 10 degree's or more- but it should not be a problem running it for the weekend- i'm not saying run it for the rest of the year- :D Jess

I'm gonna run it for the weekend and then fix it, but first I'm gonna try spinning it 180 degrees like xjjack suggested to see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the suggestions.
