did you cut off the factory trussing? if so what is the plan for replacing it?
i hope you got more tips for the plasma and didn't do all that with the whiz wheel:flipoff2:

mongosd2

wasn't trussed, those were the factory upper link mounts. Need to bend a piece of tube for the link mount and make the gussets for it. I had a fun filled day with the sawsall, not a whiz wheel...

Damn dude. Go buy one of the $399 plasma cutters in the Vendors section. You would thank yourself for it. Do your arms hurt?

thanks...I forgot how much fun it was to clean axles...I should have all the brackets from the fab shops on Tuesday. With that said I should have the axles under the truck by the weekend...

VERY nice job on the brackets.

Now get it done! I wanna see how you solve the ABS issues that we discussed.:D

Speed holes or infinite adjustability?

mongosd2
03-28-2007, 10:42 AM
those bracket are from Ballistic Fabrication, some of thier off the shelf stuff. The top coil buckets are adjustable...I should have all the front brackets tomorrow from Mike at Crossed Up and then it's welding time...I'm thinking by Monday or Tuesday of next week to have it totally done...I'm going hydro assist with the steering, so there some more bracket I need to have made...

lwg
03-28-2007, 01:28 PM
Nice choice on the brackets. That will make things much, much easier.

mongosd2
03-28-2007, 07:23 PM
all the front end and frame mount link/radius arm bracket are custom. I'm also making my own radius arms. All the hydro assist brackets will be custom cut also...it just makes the install MUCH easier...and alot cleaner...

Greg Davis
03-28-2007, 07:50 PM
Can you elaborate on how the front upper spring perches are adjustable?

And did you say that Ballistic had off-the-shelf brackets that fit the Rover coils? If so, I'm VERY interested since I'm going to re-do all of my uppers so I can lower my rig a few inches.

mongosd2
03-28-2007, 08:01 PM
fronts aren't, just the rear. Which are stock brakets at Ballistic...I need to make retainers for the rear, but i really can't do that until i get the springs off the truck, which should be tomorrow...As for the front, I need to look at the uppers, and see what I can do see what I can do with my tube bender...coil overs are looking better everyday, i just need to rob a bank...

Because of you, I was on their site today. I wish I had looked there before I did all my stuff from scratch. Would have saved me time and $$.

I did, however, buy two sets of their adj. coil buckets. Now I will be able to dial in my ride height to exactly where I want it. Thanks.:smokin:

Your build looks great, and you're doing everything very cleanly. I'm impressed so far.:cool2:

ex-mod diesel, right hand drive $18k...

you want to race that?

I was thinking more along the lines of putting a 3-door 110 body on my frame, putting in some sort of new engine, and racing that. But if you want to drop 18K on a NA Diesel 90 go for it, but i keep it after the race.

Just out of curiosity....why not move the lower link brackets further back to get some of the adjustability out of the extra holes? Seems like you'll never really need to move the axle forward into the door, but moving it back...you can always cut more later if you go to a larger tire????

isabellaclarke
04-29-2007, 08:47 PM

mongosd2

there not even tacked in yet, just checking alignment. I'll probably move them back so that the link lives in the 2nd or 3rd hole. I've already moved the axle back 3 inches to fit a 37 without having to cut the doors...

Funny, I moved mine back 4 inches and still cut the doors and rebuilt the wheel wells... But then again it was a Rangie.

Looks good, except for the blue paint. :flipoff2:

Isn't that panhard mount on the axle going to bind during articulation? Looks like it's mounted the wrong way.

Also, more pics of the new and improved Radius arm please!

mongosd2
05-06-2007, 12:18 PM
flexed the pan hard all the way up and down, no binding, but I don't like it. but like i said, it needs some work. Here's a pic of the radius arm on the bench...2" .250 DOM...

mongosd2
05-17-2007, 04:55 PM
seeing how I'm waiting for a driveshaft flange and a newly designed upper link bracket, I haven't been able to work on the rear, but I did start to cut and turn the front knuckles...With pinion angle set at 16 degrees, I needed to change the castor from 10 degrees back to 3 degrees. One pipe cutter and 3 wheels later...

revor
05-18-2007, 08:44 AM
I like it!
The radius arms are similar to a product I drew up on a very long flight to OZ. I never followed up due to time and actually being able to make them for resale at a reasonable cost.

I'm inspired I think I'll look at it again, and then forget about it 'cause I don't have time...

Buckon37s
05-18-2007, 08:28 PM
It looks good but you NEED to change the panhard rod bracket. Turn it 90 degrees. Even if you think it doesn't bind, it does. Other than that, nice job.

mongosd2
05-18-2007, 09:40 PM
forgot to mention that a new panhard is on the way.it mounts to the top of the axle and changes the axis...

Sorry if this was covered, but I can hardly read today. Is this a toy mini truck housing you are working with? If so, did you have to play games to get the width right? I like the full float in the rear, any special tricks to that, and does it use a stock length axle? I am moist with anticipation :D

mongosd2
02-27-2009, 02:25 PM
fzj80 axles, didn't need to cut the axles, just turn the knuckles...I've changed a lot on the entire suspension as I learned what worked and what didn't...

duh: 01 D2 FZJ80 axles :homer:

Thanks for your patience with an old fart.

I hope to do half as well with a pair of old FJ-62 axles. I know it will be a lot of work, but I'm a tight ass, ad the 62's should be pretty strong and one end already has a locker.

got busy with work and have been beating the shit out of the truck since I finished it...
Made a couple of front spring changes and now am running 400/300 on the front. Replaced the Rovertym rear 5" springs with 4.5" ones from Justin at Lucky 8 and have been really happy with those. 225lbs of nitrogen in the front and 200 in the rear shocks.
No issues with the full hydro on the stock D2 power steering pump, and couldn't imagine trying to turn 37" on the stock steering box.
I did lose a front brake line running a trail called the Charouleau Gap which lead to interesting day, but the rear held good enough to get it off the trail. Hydro boost is the way to go...
The ARB/Detroit is pretty stout and have yet to have an issue with any stock axle shafts...

No complaints, just not enough time to wheel
