: Buying an AK
PROJECTJUNKIE 03-18-2007, 08:06 PM I own and carry handguns but am an EVIL BLACK GUN newbie. I read the FAQ on AK47.net, and skimmed the ak build thread for info, but need to know if it is the SHTF gun for me. I will bring it out once a year for 100rds or so, and probably not clean it before putting it back in the closet next to the case of ammo. I'd consider a synthetic stock if it would significantly reduce weight. How bad is the "trigger snap" of a single arm trigger? I don't anticipate any other changes due to cost/laziness/reliability/liability.
I found a romanian with milled and pinned reciever, all wood, with 2 30rd mags, oil can and cleaning kit for $399 at a local gun shop, I assume it is new. What do I need to look for when purchasing? Looks like I can get 1k rds shipped to me for under $200. Is this the gun for me? I don't really want to hit every gun show to maybe find a better deal. Is this gun going to work well with cheap ammo? Thanks in advance guys :D
Trigger slap on my Romanian is a non issue, but I've got a Tapco G2 trigger group on mine. If you get an AK and it does slap you, replace the trigger with the Tapco for $30 and it will be fine.
You'll be fine not cleaning it after shooting IF you only shoot non-corrosive ammo but it only takes 10-15 minutes to strip one down and clean it well, why not do it? If you shoot corrosive ammo, you will need to clean it soon or it will rust on you.
TheRedHorseman 03-19-2007, 01:12 AM Milled? I didn't know the Romanians ever made a milled rifle. Perhaps a Bulgarian? Otherwise it's probably stamped.
The trigger slap is not only on the single hook triggers, the doubles can do it too. G2 trigger groups typically fix this problem though rarely there are some out of spec ones that will slap.
In Arizona corrosive ammo isn't a huge deal as far as needing cleanup in the first hour like in humid places. The ammo isn't caustic, it has salts in the primer that hold moisture against the metal of the weapon and that is what causes rust. Spraying the bore, receiver, gas system, and magazine down with windex or warm soapy water gets rid of this easily.
What gun shop was this? If that rifle says "Ewbanks" anywhere on it, don't touch it.

10-15 min ? what kind of AK do you have  :flipoff2: all of mine take like 30 sec to break down and maybe 5 min to clean at the most :D

Some of us shoot more then 10rds at a time through ours and it takes a little longer :D
AKs are great little rifles.
If you are concerned about weight you can buy Yugo or Polish rear trunions and under folders and replace the fixed one. There are templates/blueprints available online. Just involves drilling a couple holes.
The AK isn't the cheapest rifle around, but it's one of the least expensive, box magazine fed, auto loaders. Ammo is available and you can still find some good deals on it. You can reload it. I have qualified on one, 39/40 targets ranging from 50-300m, missed a 250. So they are accurate. Since there is such a large DIY following with the AK you can pretty much mod them to suit if the original isn't exactly what you want.
I think that with a 16.25" barral and an underfolder they make the perfect truck gun. It can sit in the lock box for months and months and I don't have to worry about it working properly when I pull it it.

He said Romanian and milled and pinned. This is at Marksmen, where Jensens was on prince. What is the deal with the "Ewbanks"?
Thanks Aloha!
TheRedHorseman 03-19-2007, 11:00 AM Ewbanks is a guy in winslow who makes crap receivers and rifles.
And at $399 I'm betting those guys don't know what the hell they are talking about, it's almost certainly a WASR rifle, lower quality but usually functional. If you decide to buy it, look it over carefully, make sure the front sight isn't cocked off to one side, and check to see if the magazine locks into the rifle securely without flopping around badly. If those end up being fine, then it will almost certainly run like a raped ape and serve you well.

Romy G.
Ok, 15 minutes is a little long, but down here in GA, my AK will start rusting before I even get home if I'm not careful. I've got to be pretty diligent when cleaning it or I'll have some rust, but I'm overly anal about cleaning my guns. I even strip down my XD and clean it every time I shoot it...
Milled Romanian eh? It's probably a stamped Century build for 400 bucks.
