pretty much any.
'84 '85 had more trussing in stock form.
after 85 rears are wider

The most desireable front axle is from an '85 Pickup or 4Runner because it is the last year of the solid axle and it is trussed from the factory. Most people rebuild the axles when doing a swap into a Samurai, so the most desireable is any year trussed which is usually in an '84-'85. I have seen several toyota pickups however that have trussed front axles from 82 and 83, so just keeping an eye on the trussed section is what most people look for. As far as wear, the only thing that isn't rebuildable is rust...most of the time on the knuckle ball ends. If the knuckles become too pitted then they don't seal properly. As far as rear axles go, most are interested in the 86-95 pickups known as the "ifs" rear axles because they are approx 3" wider than the earlier 79-85 solid axle equipped pickups and they have better rear brakes. Some use the e-locked rear axle from a Tacoma but they are around 60" wms-wms so they are about 5" wider than the solid axle you would be using.

I hope this helps a little,

I would say the best one is the early axle without the truss, that way you can buy one of the cheap trusses from one of the venders and weld it on top to gain a little more clearence
79-80 have no truss, 81-83 have a short truss and the 84-85 have the full truss.

I had the 85 axles, used the stock driveshafts recut. Running 34 swampers with a 4.1 t-case i never scratched the axles. Had a helluva time with t-case arms though. My fault though i should have bought a good bucket.

This is all good stuff...is there any way we can toss this all into the "FAQ: TOY AXLE SWAP" info thread?

Yes. Just post a reply in the FAQ thread. Steal the pictures by right clicking and looking at their properties. It really couldn't be easier to add it to the FAQ. :D
