: Steering Q for those with d44s
scwafish 05-23-2002, 10:16 PM Ok boys, I got my Celica pump rebuilt and I went out for a little spin in the new hood and the ps isnt very impressive. When its locked and on dirty pavement it will barely let you turn the wheel and it bogs the motor down BIG time.
Im running a celica box and pump with parts mike hysteer....What are you running and does it work well?
What pump?
What box?
What pitman (how long center to center)?
How long is your steering arm (center of tre to center of closest mounting stud)?
This thing is so close to being ready I wanna cry:crybaby2: :crybaby2: :crybaby2: Thanks for your help!
0ILBURNER 05-24-2002, 08:54 AM Toy IFS stuff on mine = pump & gearbox. I can flat-hand steer my 36" SX's w/ 2 psi on slickrock

I just put a Saginaw pump on mine. Haven't driven it yet, got done around 12 last night. On the pavement it felt much better than the Celica pump (still using the Celica box). I'll let you know how it works on the trail. Did you convert over to V-belts on your 1.6?
scwafish 05-24-2002, 03:16 PM I can flat-hand steer my 36" SX's w/ 2 psi
Thats what I'm talking about!
Az-mine is not v-belt, I got a pulley from Petro that lets you use sepentine belts on a Celica pump. Let me know how the new pump works.
Anyone else? Rude? Shadow? Glenn?
zukiboy 05-24-2002, 07:39 PM i'm pretty sure that rude uses the tracker stuff.....that's what i got.....i haven't really heard anyone being happy with it.....it's pretty weak.....go HYDRO:D
poppycock 05-24-2002, 07:51 PM go full hydro scwa! it's the only way to cover all the bases. it's not that much $$$. :D my buddies celica stuff felt weak with 33's... sure made me rethink where i was headed. speaking of which... i got a tierod with fj80 ends and a celica pitman arm that's been tapped for an fj80 tre. set up to work on a toy axle. i'm sure someone here could use it....? pm offers of $$$. :D
scwafish 05-24-2002, 08:20 PM I dont want to go full hydro cause they steer like a donkey down the road, but I'm considering hydro assist.
But if I can do a "regular" set-up that works good, I'd rather go that route and keep it simple.
ROCKILLER 05-24-2002, 08:38 PM saginaw. more power than you could ever need and its not any harder to set up except you have to use a saginaw pump. a yota pump or other wont last long
scwafish 05-24-2002, 08:48 PM Rock-What box did you use? Any pics of it mounted?

Now wait a minute. You say that like it's a bad thing. :D
BTW, have you ever driven a donkey? :rasta:

Gozuki 05-24-2002, 10:07 PM I used a sidekick pump and a Corona box, works really well with locked 35s and d44s. I am switching to a toy IFS box for more inbetween framerail room for the upcoming engine swap...
bobaki 05-24-2002, 10:40 PM tried my best to help last night ((called twice)...give a call, have some thoughts....
:D

:laughing::laughing:
scwafish 05-25-2002, 06:27 AM Have I ever driven one....THATS MY OLD RIG!!!!! Sweet pic! Thats friggin hilarious.
Bobaki- I'll call ya, but I'm sarting to think this pump is a dog. I'm real curious to see if AZ like his new combo. My new ricer has one of those cool electric ones....hmmmm
ShadowZuk 05-25-2002, 08:21 AM I'm slowly getting into wheeling again after Moab... Had a slight depression there for a few months, happens when you don't have any rigs that are fully functional :(
I just dropped almost a grand on some T-case gears :D, got some 37's etc... Now I am completley redoing my steering. I dropped the Toyota stuff and put it on my dads Zuki. It works fine with 33's but I got sick of a puking pump and bending pitman arms.
I was going to go with a saginaw box and pump but am going to use a kick box. Much newer, smaller, easier to mount, and upgradable. The kick box is getting tapped and capped until I throw a ram on. I figure the kick box is only 6 years old and you can get an AGR pump for 130 from 4 wheel parts.
It will be a while until the zuk is ready to roll -=$-$-$=- LOL. The steering is slowly getting put together, redoing wiring harness, some tubing here and there, high steer, new d-shafts etc. I have a 1.6 but it needs either new valve seals or re-ringed. It has 110K  so I'll keep my tired 1.3 for a while.
bobaki 05-25-2002, 12:50 PM BOW WOW.......:D no call necessary
Rocky Road 05-26-2002, 05:07 PM You may want to try an overdrive pulley on your crank for the P/S. Pumps are are their weakest when you're idling along.... most typically when you need them the most. An overdrive pulley will artificially create a higher RPM on the pump causing greater power at low speeds.
Run a cooler on it and high speeds should not be a problem either.
Any questions on this type setup, feel free to email us.
Bill4rest 05-27-2002, 12:36 AM Scw, the celica stuff in this samurai runs great. I think he might be running a 5 turn box, using a higher turn ratio might ease the required pressure.
.
.
.
but then again
scwafish 05-27-2002, 06:11 AM Pumps are are their weakest when you're idling along.... I aware of this. Unfortunately it doesnt get much, if any, better when I rev it.

Are there different ratios? If so which one is the one I want?

Yes there are 2 boxes, one is a 5 something and one is a 4 1/2 I think. I don't know what years though:( I have the 4 box and I have the same prob you do with 33's, but it's of little difference since your 35" tires have the same contact pressure witht the ground that my 33's have(12.5 right?). I'll be hunting down a 5 turn as soon as I get ready to rebuild.
My only point of contact is Paul Easly of silver bullet enterprises, he know's all about the celica stuff.
Rudezuk 05-27-2002, 03:45 PM sorry for the late post, just got back from the con!!
I have the Kick stuff in mine! Locked up with the boggers at 3psi i can still turn one hand!
On the pump there is a pressure release valve...take that off and under the spring in there place a washer......This will stiffen the spring and hold the pressure longer.
scwafish 05-27-2002, 04:26 PM Good info...thanks Rude. Have you had any overheating problems with this setup?

I used to before i bumped up the pressure on it.....I wheeled 4 days straight this weekend, all day long each day! No problems with it.
scwafish 05-27-2002, 11:33 PM Rude-Anymore details on this mod? Where is the valve etc?
misatori 05-28-2002, 04:55 AM I am going to try this on the Kick Pump. Not very impressive w/33 bogs in the sand. Brent at TT told me to run CASE Hy-Trans instead of PS fluid. It doesn't break down when it heats up. Plus it smells good when its cooked on a thorley.
Rudezuk 05-28-2002, 08:27 AM The valve is actually on the pump, it is the switch for the pressure sensor on the kick wiring harness....

I tried that mod before i bumbed up my pressure....It just made the pump get hotter!
Try putting an inline coller on it too.
ROCKILLER 05-28-2002, 09:10 AM my saginaw box is out of a 2wd chevy and I welded a plate to the frame and drilled some holes for the mounts. It isn't that difficult but you have to space the box from the plate a bit. I'm trying to get a hydro setup figured out without spending too much $$$ though. any ideas poppy?
poppycock 05-28-2002, 10:58 AM from what i've seen full hydro is in the $500 ballpark. i'm hoping to get mine done for about that anyways.
