I've got some shitty Craftsman ratchets, maybe they have good high-end stuff, but that ain't what I got. I'll be trying out their warrenty soon enough.;)

They hard-core guys are gonna tell yaŽ to take this lame post to chit-chat Newbie, but IŽll chime in just the same...:flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:

If you got the cash, you cant go wrong with Snap-on, the best tools in the world, INHO. Mac are also really fine, but also expensive.

However, in terms of real cost / benefit, IŽll go Craftsman every time. Lifetime, no-questions-asked warranty (that is honored, BTW) and replaced everywhere thereŽs a Sears store.

When at Sears, just be careful to select real "Crasftsman" tools, because they also sell a second line which is crap...

Snap-On

The exacting standards of Snap-On tools have tighter tolerances than most other off the shelf brands. If you get a good set of Snap-On metric sized sockets and wrenches they will work on most anything.

But I use Craftsman due to the fact that I have not hit the lottery lately!!

As I understand it,

Sears changed the tool manufactorer for Craftsman tools changed in 1997. The old craftsman tools are now Husky tools from Home Depot, and the new craftsman tools are.. well, not as good as the old ones.

Check out the Kobalt stuff a Lowes. It is made by Williams tool which is a division of Snap-On. I recently bought a 1/2" set and they ooze of quality compared to my Craftsman 3/8" set. They are a little bit more than the Husky or Craftsman, but not much.

I took my time looking through the local papers and found used Snap on tools. Paid 50% of original cost. Well worth the search and they are all covered under warranty.

been using a set of snap on sockets with my impact wrench and have not cracked a one, they are not impact sockets either, the shiny ones not intended for that use but they have been going strong for a long time, also have a 3/8 rachet that has lasted me the last 5 years no problems.I was breakin a craftsman once aweek now no more running back up to sears every week or so cuz I got a snap on.it was 70 bucks but I saved that in gas and aggrevation....snap on rules if you got tha bones to throw down

as everyone said, if ya got the $$ buy Snap-On. I have a full set of sockets and wrenches (metric and SAE), and even discounted through a friend of mine I spent a hell of a lot on em. They are beautiful though, and the ratchets beat anything I've ever used. But if this is just for the occasional wrenching on your rig, buy craftsment. Snap-On is meant to take the abuse of a mechanic working 8 or more hours every day on cars. Most of us don't need that. (I don't either, but I had to spend my money on something, didn't I? :D )

I prefer SnapOn too, Mac has some great stuff. The only problem is if you don't have ready acces to a dealer then you could be sitting on broken tools for awhile before you catch up to a dealer. That is one adavntage of Craftsman, there's a Sears on every other street corner it seems. I know I got 3 within 10 minutes of me. SnapOn ratchets are superb too, so if you can't afford the whole shebang get a set of their ratchets and the less pricey sockets. You will not regret it!

Find a Cornwell Tools guy down there. You only buy the name with Snap-On, and get a free wrench. Matco is also expensive but they have cool stuff. Mac's back with good shiat as well, but their prices are on the rise. Go Cornwell.
