I am looking for a Disco now and was wondering which year they went to the 24spline rear axle? I was looking at a '96 but couldn't remember which year they got better. Any help for this fawking newbie would be appreciated.

all discoveries are 24spline, but if i were you, i would look for a 97 or later. 97 seems to be when they FINALLY sorted out almost all of the issues plagueing the earlier models. but if the 96 is in really nuce shape for a good price, then i wouldnt sweat it too much.

96 suck. if you get one make sure it has had a valve job

I have a 97 that needs a valve job. It has 60,000 miles on it. About the only problem I have had so far.

Well, what are you waiting for? One of the valves to stick and screw everything up. Buy some gaskets and bolts and clean it out.

96s and 97s have had problems with the carbon on the exhaust valves, though it seems you hear about it less on the 97s. BMWs improvements with the electrics seem to be more evident in the 97s, as well.
I had a '96 at one time. Like a lot of the 96s, it had the carbon problem, some electric problems, & the dash peel problem -- fortunately covered under warranty.

speaking of that, my moms 97 needs a valve job too... knowing her though she will just leave it alone and let it run until the motor blows up and then bitch about how much money its going to cost to fix...
btw 70k miles
