I found a guy in Illinois that is parting out old Fords. He had a set of F-250 axles on ebay a while back (44 front and a 60 rear) that I was going to look at, but someone beat me to them. So he said he would sell me a set out of a '78 F-350, and he swears that is a 44 front just like the one out of the F-250. I did about a million searches on here trying to find any info on a D44 front out of an F-350, and got nothing. All I see is 60's front and rear. So was a front d44 an option in the older F-350's? He says that his father bought the truck new in '78, and they swapped in D60's later. Would it be stronger than a D44 from a F-250, or still considered a 3/4 ton axle? He wants $500 for the pair. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

By the way, they will be going in a '92 Yj, soa

My money is on, "if it's a 44", that someone swapped out the 60.
Before you buy ask him to measure the ring gear cover plate and aks if it's King Pins or ball joints.

What is the ring gear cover plate measurement going to tell me? A dana 44 wouldn't have king pins would it? I doubt he would lie and say its a 44 when it is really a 60  .

Never heard of a 44 in a 350. If it is a 44, it not going to be significantly stronger than any other.

Here is an email that he sent me:

"....WHAT I DID WITH THIS TRUCK WAS CHANGED TO A DANA 60 FRONT AND A DANA 70 DUALLY REAR AXLE,SO I DIDN'T REALLY NEED THEM.....IN 78 MY DAD BOUGHT A NEW F-350 FOR A SERVICE TRUCK.....IT WAS SPECIAL ORDERED....ON THE ORDER LIST...DANA 60 FRONT AXLE IS AN OPTION,OTHERWISE YOU RECEIVED A DANA 44 FOR A FRONT AXLE....REARS ALL CAME STANDARD WITH A DANA 60 ..........IN 1979 HE BOUGHT A F-350 FOR A WRECKER....THE FRONT AXLE, CAME STANDARD WITH A DANA 60 FRONT AXLE...DON'T KNOW IF THE DANA 44 WAS AVAILABLE ,CUZ HE DIDN'T WANT IT ANYWAYS,NEVER CHECKED....THE GEAR RATIO IN 1979.. OPTIONS WERE 3.54 AND 4.10,BOTH WITH OPEN AND POSI-TRAC,YOU COULD GET EITHER COMBO.......AS FAR AS F-250'S THOSE GUYS ARE CORRECT...THE DANA 60 FRONT AXLE IS BASICALLY THE SAME AXLE AS FAR AS MOUNTING IT UNDER A TRUCK...IT IS JUST A STRONGER AND BIGGER MADE UNIT BUT,THE AXLES I HAVE FOR YOU ARE NO DOUBT..A DANA 44 FRONT AND A DANA 60 REAR....I WILL HAVE PICTURES TO YOU PROBABLY SAT EVENING...I WILL TAKE COVERS OFF TO TAKE PICTURES TO VERIFY 4.10 RATIO.PICTURE OF COMPLETE FRONT AXLE AND COMPLETE REAR AXLE.....ASK AS MANY ?'S A YOU FEEL YOU NEED TO...I DOUBT THAT I CAN GET YOU ANY MAN.#'S ,USUALLY THEY ARE RUSTED TO BAD TO READ THEM WITH ACID ETCHING THEM,WE CLOSED ARE SHOP SO I NO LONGER HAVE EXCESS TO ANY ACID...EVERYTHING I TOLD YOU TODAY IS BASED ON US ORDERING TWO F-350'S IN 1978/1979.....I BEEN DEALING IN OLD FORD TRUCKS AND PARTS FOR NINE YEARS NOW ,I DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW BUT,I KNOW ENOUGH......"

The BOM numbers are like 3/8" tall and stick out at least .100". If he can't read those without acid etching, you don't want that rust bucket anyway. :)

He just sent me pics of everything. The gears in the rear diff. are stamped with 41.10 and the gears in the front are stamped with 46.13. Does this mean the ratio's are different, or are these numbers irrelevant to the ratio? I have a few pics, if anyone wants to post 'em for me :emb3: Thanks a lot guys.

46/13 is a 3.54:1 ratio

well it seems the gears are 3.54 in the front cuz if you divide 13 by 46 you get 3.53. NOT good if they gears are that much of a difference

Well, it's obvious that these aren't out of the same truck then. I uploaded the pics onto webshots if anyone wants to take a stab at what it is out of.

Well, I dunno.

Not only have I never ever heard of the D44 being the standard and the D60 being the option in 79 F350s....but,

I happen to have the 79 Ford Brochure here in front of me, and it quite clearly identifies the F350 as only coming with a d60 front.

It also shows quite clearly the 250 having d44 front std, and 60 as option.

But you put your money on whomever you like :flipoff2:

And yea - those ratios never came stockin the same truck, and are a problem if they were ever run in the same truck 9assuming equal size tires and 4wd engaged)

That is exactly what I was looking for BillaVista. Thanks a lot. I was more interested in finding out if this guy was full of shit than I was finding out what axle it was. He just emailed me and said that the Dana 44 in the picture, must have came out of an F-250, :rasta:

He still swears that he had a F-350 Dana 44. :shaking:

I told him to forget about, since he cant keep his story straight. I wouldn't mind buying the axles, but I at least want to know what they came out of before I drive 4 hours and drop $500 on them. Thanks again for everyones input.

I don't have "long term" facts with which to judge Mike at Complete Offroad, but in the little that I have dealt with him, he has come off as VERY knowledgeable and is an awesome guy to boot.

Check him out at www.completeoffroad.com (http://www.completeoffroad.com). He has piles of axle housings, parts, etc and has the facilities to build whatever you want. I know he has at least a couple F-250 d44 fronts lying around as I just snaked one from him.

He's in the suburbs of Chi-Town so he can't be too far from ya'.
