What do you think of these mudrings on these beadlocks.
they are laser cut out of 1/4" steel.

not sure if i am doing the pic thing right, but i'll try it.

How hard is it to reach the valve stem?

fabricator
05-24-2002, 06:36 PM
valve stem has been moved on back
to the center of the wheel.

Did you get those rings cut out somewhere?? If so, how much did it cost?

mj
05-24-2002, 07:11 PM
so how thick is the rim centre?
1/4 sounds heavy
lookin good

I guess the point is to keep the mud inside the rim after you drive through it, huh?

Don't mean to be rude, but that is a pretty dumb design. If you want to keep mud out, don't have any outer holes in the beadlock ring, and make a removable center piece that will close off the center hole after you tighten the lug nuts...

I can take the rude thing
it's only an opinion
First i had it with out the xtra holes in it
didn't like the look and the weight factor
then i had the holes added
thats why i posted it, to get opinions

All previous ribbing aside, I am going to offer my opinion for what its worth.... I'm with elf_cruiser on this one. I've never had any problems with mud getting trapped in the outside of the rim. Although Im sure that people who race at high speeds on dirt tracks do. If it was me, (and it will be soon) I would either use thinner material that was of higher strength, or go with thicker material and a smaller ID.

No to the smaller holes. Maybe some groves turned in to add to the looks.Find a plastic cap that is used on pipe and tubing (5-6" )during transport and storage and make that as your cap (they are cheap and easily replaced) The mud in Alaska must be wierd, I have mud packed in my rims all the time. A good mud ring and cap would be a welcome addition.http://www.weps.alloffroad.com/images/copy_of_mvc-005f.jpg

Most of the mud up here is really wet, so it just slides out of the rim. http://www.alaskaoffroad.com/images/Captcook01/72stuckCC.jpg

But I do see your point, I have had mud in wheel problems while wheelin in Idaho. Just never considered it a problem worth fixing.

You guys are missing one thing. Mud racers put a foam ring inside the tire to keep the mud from collecting inside. The widers mud ring is designed to hold this foam in place ;)

Someone else has seen a circle-track car, eh? Yeah, without the foam that stuffs into the center of the wheel, you just add a big lip for mud to get stuck behind. Of course, since we drive in hub-deep mud with 4x4s and not on dirt roads, it can still ooze in behind the sponge anyway...

The only real advantage I see with those is that you'll probably never have to worry about a rock taking out a lockin hub, or getting hung up with a pointy rock hung up inside the wheel.

Well i do more rocks than mud usually
so i'll let you know either way
but the holes are on the edge of the inner
beadlock ring so most of shit will hopefully
run back out of it.
if it don't , i'll cut out something different.
I do like the look if nothin else.

The mud will run out of a stock diameter ring better I'm thinking...

So I guess you guys would make fun of anyone who runs TrailReady beadlocks - since theirs are the same design?

Uh, no they're not.

Well I went playing for a little while today
They worked well, didn't have any mud left in them
and i was in some pretty deep stuff too.
Only thing in them was a twig about 8" long.
I think they will work, and a lot cheaper than the
others also.:D

Here is a pic of Jay King's rig. He runs a set of home made beadlocks and uses a foam plug to keep stuff out....http://www.allprooffroad.com/xtoys/johnsonvalley/matterhorn/7932.jpg

Foam thing looks pretty neat also,
But i think these will keep most of the mud
and the rocks out.
If i get in some swamp that swallows
my truck, I probably deserve to shovel the wheels out.

I sure hope you are not referring to me, because you are dead wrong if you are

Both are beadlocks with oversized outer rings... His may have a slightly smaller inner diameter - but not by much... Both are gonna trap a similar amount of material if that is your concern...

lose the small holes. Kinda pointless if your ultimate goal is to keep mud out.

I do recomend smaller holes closer to the rims edge to allow water to drain out when you are washing it though.
