: So. Cal. Zuki Run - June 23

Looking to do a day run for our visiting New Zealand Suzuki dude Scott McIsaac. He will be in town for a week, and we have just the one day to show him some Southern California wheeling.

The day will start off at Petroworks for a quick tour, then off to Los Coyotes Indian Reservation. (If you would rather pass on the Petroworks tour, then just meet us at Nessy Burger at the intersection of the 15 & 76.)

If you have not been to Los Coyotes, then this trip is for you! They have some very fun trails, and great scenery! They have trails that will challenge any rig, from stock to fully built. Lockers will make things more fun, but not required.

Interested? Drop me an email and I'll keep you all posted on the details.

Here are some links to check out:

What time are you meeting at each of the 3 places? I havent been to LC since Coyote Crawl 98. Didnt know Old Mine Road (rocky creek bed) was a dead end and that was befor the rock rails and body lift. Ouch!

I'm waiting to get a feel of how many people we have before I set the plans in stone. But I'd say we will make a good early start to get a head of some of the heat.

Do you have a preference?

Fatkid, are you saying you are on for the trip, or you want into Mustard Dogs belly?

Might need to have you host a trail run out near your area.. I hit Red Rock Canyon at least once a year from some fun scenic wheeling, and did some mapping for Cal4Wheel to fight the Mojave closure, and was running around Red Mountain and the area for that. Always a fun place to visit. Still looking for some tough trails up there though.

Hey Wayne,

I think that Scott Gomez and I may be able to make it on this trip with you guys. I'll keep you updated. I'm always looking to try new trails, and I may be down in SoCal around that time. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for the encouragement, Bill! It all depends on my work schedule, what's going on with this job Scott and I will be doing, and some other factors...but I'll do my durndest to join you guys! I'm glad to hear you'll be there too.

I checked out those photo pages that Wayne posted, and there wasn't anything real hardcore in those pics. I take it there's more there than just the type of terrain shown in those pics? Even if it is all easy stuff, it'll still be fun to see you guys, hang out, and get my ass out of the office. :flipoff2: the boss!

Be glad to have you there.. I've been working on Scott myself. :p

Those links were just some stuff I found in a Google search, and only shows a small area of the park. While most of the stuff is just fun obstacles, there are a couple of tough ostacles that will test your driving skills. it is not common to have some violent rolls and endos on a couple of these obstacles. The main issues with most of these climbs out there is they are steep, and loose. So the pictures do not tell all of the story.

Last time I was out there, we had to winch up Tobogan Hill as it has changed so much over the last few years. All depends on how much water is sitting below it.

Hope you can make it.

I'd love to host a run in this area, theres some really nice trails out here. However this time of the year it's hot for some, the temp goes into the 115* range.:)

I was thinking as we move into the wheeling season again. Heck, by then I'll even have my rig up and running.

Get to work with that bender.. Get a cage in there. Can probably get by without bumpers or nerfs at Los Coyotes. But a cage is good to have out there. Not much rock there.. Mostly climbs.

OK.. I'm trying to get a head count of how many folks are planning on attending this run. Let me give you some updated information.

The run is now for the full weekend, the 22-23, so if you can only make it on Saturday, then come on down.. Only Sunday.. Come on down!

Participation looks pretty good. Petroworks has a fair amount of folks planning to attend, I think we have a few folks from this list, and my club has decided to turn it into their monthly run. On top of that, I'm told another club will also be using the trails while we are there. (Jeeping Jeepers, or something like that.)

I'll try to get a hold of the good folks that run the area tomorrow and figure out what time they close that gate on sunday evening, and the costs involved.

So pipe up if you are interested in this run.

Thanks,

-Wayne

You go to the town of Warner Springs, and keep an eye out for the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation sign. I'll see about digging up some directions for you. Here you go:

Los Coyotes Indian Reservation is located in northern San Diego County. The Los Coyotes band of Mission Indians who control the reservation have opened their land for the enjoyment of campers, hikers, mountain bikers, buggies and 4WD enthusiasts (not for dirt bikes, motorcycles, quads or ATVs). The reservation encompasses 25,049 acres of mountain terrain covered with pine, cedar and black oak trees. The bush is largely manzanita (be careful--this can scratch your vehicle -- wax it before you go!). There is a pretty, primitive camping area with large, shade trees. The trails are for all levels of difficulty: easy, scenic trails, moderate difficulty and very difficult (be prepared for roll-overs and major damage).

Directions: From San Bernardino take Insterstate 15 south to Hwy. 79, just south of Temecula. Continue southeast for about 38 miles on Hwy. 79 to Warner Springs. On the south end of town, turn left on Camino San Ignacio and follow the Indian Reservation signs to the end of the road (mostly stay to the right when you come to forks in the road) and follow the road to the main gate of the reservation.

Their main income used to be from camping fees and Christmas tree sales. Now much of their income is from California's Indian Casinos.*

Forgot to mention, I just got off the phone with the reservation. here are the entrance costs:

$15 for day use.
$20 for day use with a tow vehicle
$20 Camping
$25 camping with a Motorhome or tow vehicle.
fires are OK in the main camping area only.

The gate is closed at 5pm Sunday. If you are still in the park after that, then you will need to have a good excuse (busted vehicle) or expect to pay for another day.

Hope to see you all out there!

Glad you guys are going to be able to make it. As a side note, I'm told that Gadzuks just happens to have their monthly meeting out there next weekend also. :p Funny how these things work out sometimes.

Glad to hear that Scott, Geoff and Bill will be able to join in on the fun. Bill and myself are going to need seats along with Scott M., so we might take advantage of your extra passenger seats. I'd really like to make sure Scott M. (from New Zealand) is riding in a Zuk. Bill and myself can ride in whatever. That's the price of having our trails rigs in little piles in the garage.

Everyone can feel free to call me at work at 949-380-3971 regarding this trip.

Trail time for each morning will be 9am.

Once you get to the campground, look for a large orange banner that reads West Coast 4x4 club. My little red Tracker should be near by.

No, I will be heading up early Saturday morning and going straight to Los Coyotes. Then I leave in the afternoon (after some trail) and pick up Scott M. in Anahiem and return to Los Coyotes that evening for some campfire fun.

We will be hitting the trails at 9 am each day. So do get there a little early, and be ready to roll, ahh I mean, be ready to wheel.. Yeah, thats better.
