I have a 1983 K-10 pickup that was converted to a 350 from the diesel, i do not know the transmission, but i do know that it has a np208c transfer case.

The problem started last week, i was moving my truck so i could load it up to go shooting, and when i got in to move it after letting it warm up for about 5 mins, i put it in drive and the truck would go about 10 feet and completely stop. i put it in reverse and it would back up, so i played around with it, checkin to make sure there was nothing blocking my tires, then i checked the tranny fluid and it was still full, reddish and did not smell burnt. so i tried to move it again and this time it was fine. so since my truck was having problems i decided not to go shooting. and when i was moving the truck back into my parking spot, there was a loud "clunking" sound that came from below, then a hard jerk then lots and lots of grinding. i shut the truck off, let it sit for about a half hour, then i went back out to see what was going on. i started the truck again, put it in drive and there was nothing there, no movement, no grinding no nothing, so i tried putting it in park, and there was the most awefull grinding noise i have ever heard, so once again i shut the truck off, had a few buddies come over to help push it into my spot. then i tried putting the transfer case in 4h, neutral and 4l and it did the exact same thing that it did in 2h.

so my question is, is the problem in my tranny or my transfer case? this is my first 4x4 so i need a lil help with it.

Any ideas?

Grinding noise sounds more like the tcase.
Start there

or 1 or of the forks and or fork tabs inside is f t up
try to put t case in 4 low Before starting motor
then start & try to move the trk
if you successfull check linkage adjustment if that checks out
pull tcase and check out the internals on it

so how difficult is it to rebuild a t case? i have alot of expirence with engines and tranny's but the whole 4x4 part is new to me.

It's basically a simple 2 speed manual tranny. Try Motive Gears website for an exploded diagram. And make sure you have some good lock ring pliers or you'll be cussin'.

Your best bet is tryin' to find a manual tranny shop around that has a bunch of junk cases for cheap parts.
