: Does Permatex expire?
I had to drop the oil pan on my 22RE last week, so I used some Permatex "Ultra Black" sealant for the FIPG. 3 days later the stuff was still as gooey as the day I put it on, it never hardened. I don't know how old this tube was, but I had to pull the pan back off, clean it all off (total PITA). :mad3:
I have a newer tube of "Ultra Blue", seems to be the same stuff, only blue. Squeezed some on a piece of cardboard last night as a test, it's totally cured now. So I'm gonna use this instead this time.
I looked all over the tube, there's no expiration date on it. Anybody ever have this happen? I think from now on when I open a new tube I'm gonna put the date on it, then throw it away after a year or so.

Well, yeah, except that I used this tube before to do the same exact thing, it worked perfectly. Weird.
4x4junkie 05-26-2002, 03:28 AM I've had that happen to me, also. It seems after a few years it gets old or something.
Cheap insurance against having to redo everything, I just go buy a new tube if the old one is more than a couple years old.
emsoffroad 05-26-2002, 11:49 AM All the stuff I used, would dry up, never had the no setup thing. Then again a tube of RTV never last long around my place. Did you let it freeze alot? Not that I think it matters, cause mine sets out all year. Weird.
Explorer 05-26-2002, 11:44 PM I think the stuff does change with time or conditions. I used a new tube of blue RTV the other day and it came out all chunky and liquid was seperating from the solids. I discarded it since it seemed so fawked up and picked up a new tube.
DCruiser138 05-27-2002, 12:05 AM maybe it piked up some moisture and screwed it all up?:rasta:
ouibus 05-27-2002, 09:41 AM First, is your screen name referring to KLF the band? If so, that is sweet.
I am pretty sure that RTV has life expectancy with it. I would say to keep the tubes around for a year or so, and then throw them away. Also, there is some stuff called The Right Stuff from Permatex that I have been getting rave reviews on. I have not used it, but it is really supposed to work well. HTH

Nope, sorry. They're my initials.

I've used some of that Right Stuff in a can like a Cheez-Whiz can, it works pretty cool. I figured after I used up all the old tubes I had here I'd get some of them.
