need help on deciding what motor to go with. building up a toyota 4x4 and i am going to use eighter the 351m or the 302. but i do not know witch one is better. the main use for the truck is mudding and trails, no rocks here. what would be the best way to go? the 351m is out of a 78 bronco and the 302 is out of a 86 ltd. hopping to run at least 36 inch tires. any info will help greatly.
thanks
:) :) :)

I honestly can't think of any reason anyone would intentionally swap in a 351M
so my vote'll go to the 302

HP will be about the same. The 351m burns the 302 for low end. The 302 is FI. The 302 will have oil pressure. The 302 parts are very cheap. The 302 is much lighter. The 302 will fit easier. The 302 .... You can see the pattern forming here.

so then it would be more worth my time to put in the 302 in than the 351m? i was told by a friend that a lot of people that use a 302 in a toyota have problems with them. for all the 302 motors i have had , no problems , but most were in cars. is there anything i should look out for when doing this swap?
and don't i need better low end for mudding?
thanks

if you are worried about low end power, use a 351W. most of the FI crap off of the 302 will work, and aftermarket lower intakes are available for it to bolt up the intake. If you want to use the 302, and are worried about loosing 49 cubic inches, just stroke it to 347. Kits have been proven reliable, and are dirt cheap. Try to find a HO motor if you can. (forged pistons, roller cam). avoid '87's They have bastard heads so I am told (maybe it was the 86??) Nuff said.

if your looking for stump pulling power but not the weight of the 460 and your not plannin gon spinning over 5 grand alot, why not drop in a 400. it will wiegh the same as the 351m.

It will weigh more, longer connecting rods, and larger offset on the crank.:flipoff2: OK so it's like a pound or two.
But you still won't have any oil pressure. I like the mod engine, I would just never swap one into anything that wasn't setup for it, unless you are planing a 460 in the future.

Actually the conrods are exactly the same on the 351m and 400, the crank and pistons are the only difference. And there is a few items on the market to make a 400 make more power if your looking for it.

I hate a one sided discussion, I vote that you go for the 351M and then I would remove that 302 for a small fee. (waste disposal), I mean what are friends for?
