: what rear end is this?
poorman4x4 03-30-2007, 09:12 PM I got a chevrolet rear axle from a 88 1-ton srw today. Its a full floater but doesnt have 14 bolts. It looks like a 60 housing, but did they use 60ff rears in late 80's chevrolets? Did they use them at all? That thing is one heavy axle.Possibly a dana 70?
Davethorik 03-31-2007, 12:05 AM It's a 70.
poorman4x4 03-31-2007, 04:54 AM Hey, thanks for the input. So is a 70 better than a 14bff? Worse? How much do you expect to pay for a 70?
poorman4x4 03-31-2007, 04:55 AM Just wanna see if i got a good deal.
nooblet 03-31-2007, 08:39 AM After market support is better for a 14-bolt. 14-bolts are cheaper to modify also. My buddy has a d70/d60 combo out of a dodge 1-ton that he's running in his buggy and he's having some difficulty finding after market support for his d70. It took him a while to find disc brake brackets for it. You can get almost anything for a D70, you'll just have to look a little harder and you'll probably have a smaller selection. By no means a crappy axle, 14-bolts are just cheaper and easier to find parts for.
Depending on what gears the D70 has in it and what kind of shape its in I would probably not pay much more than 50-100 for it.
Chris
edit: I misread your post I thought you were looking at it I didn't realize you already bought it.
poorman4x4 03-31-2007, 10:13 AM It has 4.10's i only paid 100.00 for it.The brakes are new,with new wheel cylinders etc.I have a 14bolt semi-floater now on my truck so i guess i upgraded pretty well :D
TAWL_BOY 03-31-2007, 11:24 AM And you don't need discs for your application. Good drums will be fine.
abig84 03-31-2007, 02:42 PM i got a 70 i been trying to sell forever no one wants the dang thing. one problem i found for them is they dont sell spools for them or if they do i cant find one
forbergler 03-31-2007, 04:43 PM The 70 came with several different axle shaft sizes, the smaller of which(32 spline, I believe) is the most common and not as strong as a 14 bolts shafts. The 70 also lacks the pinion support that the 14 uses, but the advantages of that when you're talking about pinion shafts this large is negligible, unless you're pulling very heavy loads. Detroits for the 14 are only $250 or so because it uses a four pin spider trunion and you re-use the original case. One downfall of the 14 is the small range of gears; only as low a 5.13, whereas the 70 can go as low as 7.17, which can be matched with a 60.
zorack15 03-31-2007, 05:31 PM email me a pic and i can tell what it is(toyotasrok@yahoo.com. As far as I know chevy did not use a any dana rear axles in there truck in the 80's or
90's. Only 14 bolts unless somone swapped it out for a 70.
forbergler 03-31-2007, 06:02 PM I think Zorack is right. 70's were found under Fords and Dodges. The only dana rear that comes to mind for a Chevy was a 44 back before they went with 10 and 12 bolts in 1/2 tons. 1 tons back then used an Eaton. Does it have a drop out third and a removeable rear cover? Send me a pic too. forbergler@aol.com
poorman4x4 03-31-2007, 08:04 PM Okay tommorow ill take a pic and email it.Well i measured the spring pads and their 47" apart. In other words it matches my leaf springs on my 1989 chevy1500. I know for sure there are not 14 bolts on the cover but 10 bolts. I know for sure its a ff. I know for sure its heavy as hell.
poorman4x4 03-31-2007, 08:24 PM Well what i mean is the spring pads, bump stop pads, and shock mounts line up to everything on my 1/2 ton. I dont know if they would go through the trouble of welding all this on the axle cause werent older axles 42" spring pad width? Thanks for all the input guys:D
nooblet 03-31-2007, 11:22 PM You have a red star...just post it here.

poorman4x4 04-01-2007, 09:26 AM photos didnt upload hold on
poorman4x4 04-01-2007, 09:33 AM Here it is .....
xjfreak03 04-01-2007, 10:22 AM Sure looks like a 60 or a 70 to me. Since the diff tag is gone, on the diff cover side of the axle on the right(?) side tube there is a Bill of Materials number. Get out some sand paper, sand it down till you can read it. Go to the dana/spicer web site and type in the BOM and it'll tell you what it is if its a dana axle. but it looks like a 60 to me
poorman4x4 04-01-2007, 12:47 PM Okay i put the numbers in at spicerparts.com.According to the BOM and GM catalogs its a 70HD srw used on 1-ton trucks and motorhomes.
TAWL_BOY 04-01-2007, 11:55 PM Your stock spring width should be 47". Order some new perches from a vendor. If you need some help you can bring the axle by my house and we'll plasma off the old one's and weld on the new ones.
Davethorik 04-02-2007, 01:50 AM email me a pic and i can tell what it is(toyotasrok@yahoo.com. As far as I know chevy did not use a any dana rear axles in there truck in the 80's or
90's. Only 14 bolts unless somone swapped it out for a 70.
No. They used D70HD's under DRW pickups in that time frame. Not c&c DRW trucks (they have 14 bolts), just the pickups. Chevy also used the D60 rear in some older trucks (my '69 GMC has one from the factory...interesting since they only came under Fords and Dodges).
