: F-Toy #72 Build
Picked up chassis #72 last weekend. What a great way to haul it, with a toyota.:D 1100 miles, 16-17 hours of driving. Well worth it.

I've already gotten a head start on this project. The frame has been stripped of all mounts, and cleaned up. I also fabbed up a front hanger.

Started to make some motor mounts.

RE:Todd 04-01-2007, 12:31 AM Are you going to gusset that front hanger? It look's like you'll have lot of leverage on them.

There will be more gussets added later.:)

Turbo motor?:smokin:
I don't know yet..... I am having a hard time with this one. I want to be able to compete maybe next year, and the motor is not legal for comps. I may use it for a while and maybe get a different motor for it when I start competing. Either way it will have propane.:D
nice work. looks like you are making good headway. and something a little different for front spring hangers. cool. :)
Got a little more done today. Put together some inboarded hangers in the rear. Im not so sure of the design I came up with... They will need to have some more gussets added for sure.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s239/Matt_E1/buildpics004.jpg
I also added more plate to the shackle hangers.

azyota 04-07-2007, 10:39 PM Looks pretty cool so far. I like the original ideas on spring mounts! Are you planning to run a boomerang style rear shackle?
how is your shackle going to compress???
mtbrjon 04-08-2007, 05:35 AM Looks pretty cool so far. I like the original ideas on spring mounts! Are you planning to run a boomerang style rear shackle?
Doesn't look like he has much choice does it.
Looks pretty cool so far. I like the original ideas on spring mounts! Are you planning to run a boomerang style rear shackle?
Thanks! Yes I will be making a boomerang type shackle. The springs I will be running wont have a whole lot of up travel. I put the hanger on the inside to get the wheel base I am shooting for. I'm using stock rears front and rear, for now. I am on a tight budget here so these springs fit the budget well.:flipoff2:
desertoy 04-09-2007, 10:29 AM I'm wondering if your rear shackle idea will end up working. Have you measured where your spring center pin will end up to make sure you have enough tire clearance?
As far as the turbo motor goes. Go ahead and run it. You can still compete, you will just be in the exibition class.
Looks good!

I'm not sure about the spring setup yet... Are you talking about clearance to frame or chassis. It looks like it will be ok either way.
How do you like my roof panel?

YELLOWHOBO 04-09-2007, 11:20 PM Nice Head cover! Can't wait to see that on the Comp circuit. It will surely be a crowd favorite! Keep up the good ideas.
Heres a pic of what I've been working on. TG 4.70 gear set, Marlin MC07 R10 adapter, and a Longfield chromo ouput shaft. 23 spline both cases.:smokin:
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s239/Matt_E1/buildpics006.jpg
Next up will be a t-case crossmember and welding the motor mount tabs in place.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s239/Matt_E1/buildpics009.jpg
Turbo motor, R151, and the cases.
The tranny and motor will be cleaned like the cases at a later date. I can only handle so much at one time.
Look what I made!!!! Im thinking a square tube welded to the bottom of the plate with bushings at the ends should be enough. What do you guys think? Should the top be braced?
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s239/Matt_E1/buildpics010.jpg
I also tacked the motor mounts in place. Went the full 8" back and 1" down.
http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s239/Matt_E1/buildpics012.jpg
And some gussets for the rear hangers.

MT4Runner 06-27-2007, 12:17 AM Yes! I remember your build! I recall this pic, the one of you hauling the chassis, and the inboard rear shackle hanger.
You've got me inspired to do the same for my roof panel, except that I'll probably put the sign side down, paint the top to match the rig, and have the roof only visible to passengers...or when the rig is rolled! :grinpimp:

looking good. i imagine that your tcase mount will work fine. typically, if you have solild motor mounts, you can run the stock tcase mount.

I finally got to work on this thing today. Its been a while since I gave it any love. I started working on the axle housings. Shaving the bottoms and started on the diff guards. I cant wait to get them loaded and under the rig.
Heres pics of the housings, the rear needs a few more pieces on the diff guard and perches welded on.......

The other thing Ive been thinking about is the motor. I dont have one. I was origanlly planning on running a 22r on propane, but lately Ive been thinking about fuel injection. Now that I have a baby coming I want to put a back seat in it. I dont see there being enough room for a seat and tanks and some gear. I can cut up a harness for efi and buy a fuel cell and pump for less money then a pane setup, and I should be able to find a cell that fits between the frame in the back that I can build a floor over. Does anyone have any opinions for me? Im going to be getting a motor for it soon.
good job on the axles. and your right, the EFI can be cheaper and it tends to take up less space. i bought an good running EFI with harness for 500 one time.
Irish Style 10-28-2007, 12:10 AM Now that I have a baby coming I want to put a back seat in it. I dont see there being enough room for a seat and tanks and some gear.
I think you could fit a PRP Preemy seat in between the tanks if you stand them up. My tanks are angled and I think I have room for the third seat. I will be installing a preemy seat in the next couple months. I'll post pics when I do.
Heres a pic of the diff guard on the rear housing finished.

i havent seen that design yet. looks freakin cool:smokin:
Well I commited to fuel injection. Picked up a running 22re this week from a local junkyard, and bought an RCI fuel cell. I think the cell will work great its 30"wx17"lx7"h. If I mount it just below the top of frame in the rear it will only be below the frame about 3.5". Then build my floor structure over the top, and a beefy skid below.

I spent some time this weekend on the fire wall design and mounting the pedals. Its turning out pretty good. I copied the design of the ultimate formula four by hendrix, with my own twists. its far from done but you can get the general idea.
I ended up using the pedals out of an 84 pickup. Theyre rusty and nasty looking but will be cleaned and painted after Im done mocking them up. I mounted them as far forward as I could without making them too vonerable to the tire. I used two simple tabs on the top and one on the square tube at the bottom. Very simple mounting but suprisingly strong.I also had to shorten the pedals so that my long feet could work them. Next up will be the go fast pedal!!! Then maybe mounting my seats.:smokin:

I was thinking that the gas pedal was going to go towards the passenger side of the windshield support tube. If I tried to squeeze them all between the outer tube and the support tube they would be too close together. Im not done with the pedal arms yet. They are just tacked for now. I may have made them a little too short and I want the clutch pedal a little closer to the brake pedal. I want to have a place to rest my foot when the clutch is not used (which is most of the time).
Im also noticing that most everyone is mounting the pedals 2"-3" farther forward than mine, and some are remaking mounts for the pedal arms. I guess I took the easy route on mine.:flipoff2: Im glad I only spent about 20 min. on the mount tabs, because Im thinking I may go forward a bit with the pedals to make room for the back seat. So I think I will throw a seat in to see how the pedals feel and if I want to go forward with them.
Oh and since I dont have a helmet yet maybe someone could give me a round-a-bout number for distance between head with no helmet and the roof. Im sure it varies from helmet to helmet, but I just want to see where Im at. Thanks.
MT4Runner 12-17-2007, 07:13 AM Your daughter is beautiful. Congratulations!!

I'd guess +1.5" for a helmet, so 4.5" with no helmet?

Put a helmet on, then hold a closed fist on end between your helmet and the bars, both roof and B pillar. Your looking at about 6-7" of clearance.

1.5" Sounds pretty reasonable for a helmet. I hope I can find one that thin!

So helmets average 3"-4" thick? Wow!
Maybe we should start a helmet comparison thread?
benttoy 12-18-2007, 06:37 AM If you cut an inch or 2 out of the middle of the toy pedal mount, that may give you enough room to mount the gas pedal.

Good idea but I think I would rather rework the pedals themselves. I've already cut and shortened them, theyre just tacked together for now to see where I was at.
toyotanuts 12-18-2007, 02:29 PM So your head has to be a certain distance from the b piller?
I didn't see that in the rules, I just seen the clearance on the roof had the be 3" above the helmet.
Is that a rule?
If so i might have to change somethings:shaking:

Here's some pics of my recent progress. This is where my driver seat ended up. With a helmet on I have 2.5" to the nearest tube.:( So I may end up lowering the seats .5". I also started on the floor structure. Im planning on sheet metal from the frame rail in, and expanded metal from the frame out.

I was at the same spot with mine. Rear mounts will be below the floor--bottom of seat back tube will be sitting at floor level:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7589645&postcount=48
That will get you an easy inch lower, still fit next to the tranny, and keep the chassis low. :smokin:
I'll probably drop the floor pan about an inch behind the seat so I can get to the bolts. the back left mount will sit outside the framerail, so that will be an interesting mount to build.
What did you have to change on the front xmember?
How's your daughter?
Looking good.

I looked into mounting my seat a little lower, but decided to mount it where its at so I could get the passenger seat as low. As it is, I had to notch the lower frame of the passenger seat up over the tcase. I think Im going to run them how they are and hope they will break in a little and maybe gain that .5".:flipoff2:
As far as the front hanger goes... The way it sets now the shackle angle is horrible. Even if the springs were sitting completely flat the angle still wouldn't be good. And its setting way too high!! Im sure it will sink more as I add more wieght, but I dont think it will be enough. Im going to move forward on other things before I hack the hangers off. Im just thinking out loud.:D
My daughter is doing very well!! Thanks for asking! She gets me up every morning at 4 am. I dont mind though..... Shes worth it.:)
MT4Runner 01-02-2008, 07:52 AM I'm planning to go rears up front on mine. I used the same eye to sleeve distance as on the RUF's in my 4Runner. Hopefully with less weight on the front and one or two less leaves, the distance will still want to be the same.

Other people will be able to drive. Im only 5'10" and most of the people that would drive are as tall or taller then me. The only exception would be my better half. She might have a little trouble reaching the pedals. If she does, I will make mounts farther forward and have the seat pinned for quick adjustment.:D

I have managed to get a little time on the F-toy, about 4-6 hours a week. So progress has been real slow. I got the front axle painted and assembled. I added a truss to the top, and added a fifth stud. Everything turned out pretty well except my paint job (it was too cold to be painting:shaking:).
Specs on the axle:
High pinion, 5.29, ARB
30 spline Longfields
Longfield hub gears
ARP steering studs, and a fifth stud
ARP hub studs on the way
High steer
Knuckle ball gussets
Shaved, diff guarded, and trussed
Backing plate eliminator
Rock rings
FJ rotors
Knuckle rebuild kit
Still need wheel spacers
Need to go back through and torque everything, install the cone washers and lock nuts on the steering arm studs, dial in steering stops, and install the hubs after I get the hub studs.
Theres a couple thing that I wish I would have done. Have the ring and pinions cryod and upgrade the diff studs. Oh ya!! and buy diamonds!!

Thanks man!! Thats a really cool idea for the diff armor. I just might have to do that.:D:D
Well proggress has slowed way down. I just started a new job and am working and staying out of town now. Between that and the baby my time is very limited.
I have managed to spend a little time on it. I reworked my front hanger, drilled holes higher up. It sits a little lower now, the shackle angle isnt ideal but Im going to run it for now.
Steering box is half way mounted, need to finish that up. Steering shaft is also being worked on. Front axle is wrapped up accept for new wheel studs for my spacers, and wheel bearings. A rivised grill hoop, and hood bars are on the way. Rear end is awaiting a set of springs, rear should go together pretty quick.
I need to renew my red star, so no pics yet. Ill post them as soon as I get the star renewed.

Hey MT4Runner, long time no hear from!
The Ftoy is still sitting just the way it was in the last pic. I haven't had a minute to work on it for months now. I started a new job and am working 50+ hours per week and commuting 1.5 hours a day. Although I am thankful to have this much work with the economy the way it is, it kinda sucks not having time for myself. I may have to hire someone to finish the Ftoy for me.
My daughter is doing great. She just turned one on the 14th. Man time flies.
She started walking at about 8 and a half months, and now she runs all over the place and gets into everything. She cute as can be and I enjoy every minute I get to spend with her. I especially can't wait to get her out on the trails with me. :D
MT4Runner 12-21-2008, 09:36 AM It's -5ºF here and I was planning to take the girls snow wheelin'...but the Runner is in the Toterhome, and the Toterhome is backed up against a building...and it gelled and wouldn't start. :(
Oh well, watching movies and drinking cocoa now and sledding when the sun is a bit warmer.
I know about work and family and fabbin' time!! I have two out of town projects--Wednesday project meetings are a 1.5 hour drive one way, and Thursdays are a 642 mile round trip...so I miss those evenings for shop time, and I spend most of the evenings I'm home with the girls. Oh, well...the rig will wait, but the girls grow quickly!!
Front axle housing is 95% done so at least I can finally install those 30spl Longs I bought from you 1.5 years ago!
NORGROW 09-06-2009, 06:48 PM i know that you have done something to this money pit in the last year, so post up some shit man!!!!!

NORGROW 06-12-2010, 07:52 PM i think that f-toy #500 will be on the trail first
Sold the chassis this morning. :( The new owner may take up where i left off on this thread, or start his own. Kinda sad to see it go, but happy that its not just sitting around anymore.
I am the new owner of f toy # 72. I will be builing it for about a year. I will be asking some questions a for advice on some things. I plan on a 4 seater so my granddaughter can ride with me, also 4 link front and rear with air shocks. I dont plan on competing with it.:)
Check out my #515 build, your plans sound similar to mine. Good luck!
MT4Runner 07-05-2011, 01:26 PM More likely your frame is off center--even just in the front of the framerails. I had everything fit below the seats, then did the back, and my front framerails were 1"-1.5" off center. I had to put a ratchet strap on the chassis/frame diagonally and pull the frame in line under the chassis when I welded the front of the chassis to the frame.
Very minor chance it's your chassis--check diagonals--but most likely the old frame.
I ran in to this same problem when I set the chassis the first time. The old Toyota frame is not perfect but it is close. The problem youre running into is the side tubes of the ftoy chassis aren't the same. One side is sucked in farther at the bottom then the other. I would work off a center line front to rear and if the side tubes end up too far off in comparison to the frame cut them off and redo them. I pulled one side in with ratchet straps and called it good. Hope this helps. Glad to hear its being worked on.
offroadman1973 07-08-2011, 11:42 AM any pics??
