: FTOY newbie
.5ton_FToy 04-02-2007, 12:42 AM long story short. I have had a blazer, 2 cherokees and one 83 toyota long bed. after selling, breaking, burning and blowing motors up in those it was time to build a new off road toy. I was gonna build another fullsize but that didn't make since as I have a 68 burban i'm also building. So, I picked a F-Toy. I'm in Oregon so the comps are kinda out of reach for me and I just wanted something to hit the local trails with and to use up my left over parts.
So...
I picked up a 1982 long bed chassis that I have already chopped up to fit the cage. I also have placed my order with Mike and will be driving down in 2 or 3 weeks to get it.
Mine will be running a carb'd 350 hydro 465-clocked 208 with half tons axles.
I also have already inboarded the rear springs which are stock 91 k5 52" springs with an off set zero rate and a set of cherokee revolvers. I put in a mini spool and a set of black widow performance disc brakes.
I have a HAD rear CV shaft and the 465-208 is raised up for a flat floor.
I'm coil linking the front with my left over cherokee coils and some 1.75" DOM for the links. sky's histeer arms and I have a home brew hydro assist going in too.
the goal is to add chromo shafts and weld on some DIY beadlocks for the 39.5 Iroks. I went with a 2 seater as no one wants to ride with me as it is.
after reading all the threads I'm still looking to find some measurements on where the seats end up sitting as far as height and how far back from the firewall.
and what about a fuel cell vs a stock gas tank...?
I want to down the road swap to propane so I'm thinking of just saving the money and run the stock tank for now.
and yes before anyone post the icon, I will be adding pics soon(this week)
Jeep07 04-02-2007, 08:53 AM I'm trying to decide right now what I want to do with my chassis. Go f-toy spec or go all custom with big motor etc. What made you decide custom and not f-toy spec?
Sounds like it will be a nice buggy.
cool build. but lose the 10bolts and get some toy axles:)

I chose custom vs spec becuase I'll make it to a comp event and also I had all the chevy stuff laying around for past projects.

I would but these axles cost me $60. and to find a toyota front up here that is under $250 and not stolen is hard to do. plus they are too narrow to my liking.
Im4yotas 04-04-2007, 11:48 AM $250 plus some Longfields or Bellfields, or break 10 bolts every time out...
If you need width, a D44 can be had full width for similar price and strength of a Toy.
As far as seats, that's one of the last big things you should do. Get the drivetrain mounted, floor built and pedals mocked up. Then make the front and rear chassis mounts a few inches taller than you think you'll need and tack them on. Set the chassis down, and throw a seat on the floorboard. Hold up a steering wheel while sitting in the seat, and your feet on the mocked up pedals. Move the seat around till it's comfortable and your head can't hit the B pillar, and call it good. Then you can put your helmet on and measure your head clearance. Whatever you have past 3" is how much to cut down the chassis mounts.
.5ton_FToy 04-04-2007, 12:37 PM I'v got a dana 44 flat top front and I have a 12 bolt in the rear with disc. I choose to go disc to keep the axles in if a c-clip should fail the rotor and caliper won't allow it to part ways. eventually I'll probably end up going with a 14 bolt and some 44 or so but for now these will get me back on the trail...we'll see for how long.
.5ton_FToy 04-17-2007, 10:39 AM leaving thursday to pick up #74 !!!!!
flaash 04-17-2007, 11:32 AM i have a front housing from a 85 toy that is straight and a bent 83 front that can be stripped to build the good 85 that you can buy for 150. and i live on your way to apple valley.
rickibrat2 04-18-2007, 04:34 AM i live over in dallas if you need any help and i also have an f toy
i know of no others in your area trails a few of them around browns camp.
plus you have the sand flea ra;;y coming up
.5ton_FToy 04-18-2007, 02:30 PM Some pix of your column and brake mounting would be great.
TSF will be great once I'm done. I haven't been there in years. I mainly hit the dunes or some trails outside of town here.

ask fatkid about the new trick clutch and brake mounting system it is also worth its weight in gold i am goign to run it on my ftoy.
rickibrat2 04-18-2007, 07:05 PM if you are talking about the ones hendrix that are not for public sale let still having fit and cleancre problems i was told last week
rickibrat2 04-18-2007, 07:07 PM if you want i can bring mine over not that far from you
rickibrat2 04-18-2007, 07:15 PM what dunes do you ride at
also the Sand Flea rally has been moved till the end of june at sand lake
have a few ideas on using a diffrent type brake boosters that is small so steering shaft will clear better like out of a VW geta GTI it looks about 2 inches smaller
and F toys are way lighter then trucks
flaash 04-18-2007, 10:57 PM if you are talking about the ones hendrix that are not for public sale let still having fit and cleancre problems i was told last week
i said ask fatkid about them i never said they were available yet.:shaking: .you can still ask seeing as last time i checked you dont start building the rig by installing the clutch and brake pedals.
you probably have a couple of months untill you need them. so ask because they look and sound like they are going to be bad ass and i am definately going to be using them on my rig because it will be the cleanest way to mount the pedals and masters!
ya, i would so buy all the kits i could for the rig. there is going to be plenty of other stuff to spend numberous hours fabbing up. anything that can save me a whole day of fabwork is worth a ton in my book.
Im4yotas 04-19-2007, 12:42 AM Hobie, what ever happened to your early prototype? You could sell a ton of those:D
