Im getting a 404 for a poor mans expedition rig.

Anyone else got a Unimog?

Should be here end of June

came about as close to buying one as possible without actually ending up with it in the parking lot. I did quite a few months of research on them and drove a bunch of them. I will own one eventually.

I just emailed the owner of this board the other day about the idea of adding a Unimog forum to this board. Lets get more mogs on here.

YESSSSS

cause u will be dealing with some of the same mechanical concerns such as axle lubrication at travel speeds and lack of R&P options

I'll just put 44" tires under it and then the gearing is not a prob. 7.56:1 gears and 30% overdrive= @2500 rpm at 60 mph. Keep it under 60 (which is the speed limit in many places) and lubrication shouldn't be a prob. The math works out to 500 rpm at the wheel, sustained speed. Take whatever size tire and work out the max speed. Since my speedometer won't be accurate, I'm gonna pace a friend with accurate speedo and find what rpm that is. Get a tach with a shift light and set the shift light at that rpm. Don't go fast enough in top gear to make the shift light come on. Pretty simple.

I agree with "offroadr35," there isn't a need on the Pirates board for a Unimog forum. There just isn't enough interest in them.

There are already well established boards dedicated to the weird trucks as you know. Coachgeo I've seen your name come up on a few boards as well as "your" Unimog so you know that they already exist.

That is VERY wrong information. ONE is not lots. Only one is active and its a mail list. Also, the prevailing attitude there is u dont modify mogs which is very oppoist the rest of the off road world. Ive had several from their email me off list after I had problems, and they each said the info there is good but some of the smugness toward modifications make it hard to get ideas and information. The other mog places are hit very few times a month much less a day like here.

Very true. Similarly to 'Mog sites, I freqent many places looking for parts and most often they are not worth it 'cuz posts are so far apart. A post may become irrelivent just because it's so old a person replying to it may not know whether or not situations have changed or not, or if parts are sold. We really do need a place that gets frequented often to talk about Mogs. :D

I cann't find any cheap to import, the Swiss Army 404's are the cheapest but they are still in the $6000/$8000 range and they are basically just stripped army rigs. Anyone know where the really good Mog deals are?:confused: I'd love to own one of these. I might have to check in Canada, they seem to have a bunch.

Hey Ken, are you the dude I keep seeing around town driving a sweet silver Mog? Haven't seen it on the road lately though.

Nope not me, I wish that was my truck though. All of mine are pretty rough. Mine would be in better shape if I didn't have a cable connection that I sit my ass in front of playing lots and lots of video games all day on.

Ok, ok...I did some thinking at work last night (since I work 11pm to 730am) that a new board might not be that bad. In my opinion it shouldn't be just a "Unimog Board"... but more a "Mercedes Board." If you look at the listing of boards here at Pirate they are pretty much by manufacturerererer (sp?).

Anyways, off to shoot some punks online..hehe

Jay Im sure u are aware of the seller in KY. The $$ range you mention is typical but surf the http://www.carradine.net/exchange/ site for direct deals from owners. The best guy; the whom I am buying from is Chirs at http://hometown.aol.com/RImogs/index.html

Remember two things. One a rig in the $$ range your talking will in stock form out perform on the trail most very modified offroad rigs out there. Or so Ive been told. It will drive you to the trail head too but very slowy. Two, condiser how your going to get it home after you purchase it. It can be anywhere between 800 to 2 grand to have it shipped to u. Its funny.. its cheaper to ship across the ocean than it is across the US. Im going to go pick mine up and drive it home and hope it is mechanically sound as I have been told. It's arriving at Chris's dock in Rhode Island via a boat trip from Belgum

How bout a lot of you guys start posting lots of Mod info and Tech info about 'Mogs.... then Lance can decide if there's a "need" for a seperate section....So far I see less than 10 people, which doesn't warrant a dedicated forum....

Ur points are well taken about the numbers. They are not many people modifying Mercedies vehicles,, YETTTTTT.

So whats wrong with Pirate being on the cutting edge!!!! .. With the increase of Mog axles going under trail rigs; including a rig at the TTC,. Also, the number of mog retailers nearly having doubled over the last few years and now with two mogs on the rockcrawling championship circuit.... its bound to grow. Pirate can be the first to truely service the modified mogs. NO BOARD IS SERVICING THAT NEED.

I agree a Mercedes Page is a must have. I mean why not? The mog is one of the baddest built off road rigs friom the factory ever built...Period. Its not like its gonna take mass bandwidth or space on a server. If it only gets used a littler and gets 2 or so new members every few weeks then so be it, but it will grow once the word gets out there that the Bad ass Pirates have a Mog page thats as cool as the others pages but just for Mercedes dudes.

I would also offer that a Land rover page would be cool. Lots of D-90s out there and Discos that will be modified more and more as price comes down. Hell at one time I wanted a D-90 body on my Scout 2 frame and running gear. It would have been bad ass.

Anyhow i hav 404 axles on the way for the gearboxes and axles and C's to use with my Dana 60 and Dana 70 axles.With the 5.88 cryo treated gears it will give me like 11.67 in the axles. Gonna open up a #10 can of whoop ass on the crawling world. So i am down with the tech Lance:smokin:

I'd go for a 'Mog forum, or something along those lines. I'm putting 404 axles under my CJ, and it would be nice to be able to bounce ideas off other people.

Right now the only place for portal axle tech that I've found is the SRC bbs. Very informative, but it dosen't receive near the traffic that this one does, so responses are slow at times.

I have just begun to look into the Mog and what it has to offer. Before I found PBB through my buddy Gozuki I had been to quite a few other 4x4 sites. Pirate4x4.com is BAR NONE the best site on the net. I might have stumbled on it like I did the others, but who knows. I 100% concur with COACHGEO that if PBB puts up a Mog Forum that it will most definitely be noticed. Of the competition mogs that were mentioned, do any of them have any affiliation with another website/BBS:question: I have seen P4x4 stickers on some rigs at the comps, why not find out if they would slap some on their rigs and help get the word out.

Flame on if you will, but why shouldn't Pirate be the one in the forefront?!? Are we on the cutting edge of it or not?!? :beer:







coachgeo, unimogken ... howzabout putting up a post with a poll:question: make it interesting and see what the general public says about it. With a dedicated thread it might be easier to follow. Maybe the ModGod of the forum would be so kind as to grace us with a sticky. :beer: The LRs got one didn't they. :D
