If you are coming out of Sparks and take 445 to 446 around the bottom of Pyramid Lake. I took 447 North towards Black Rock and in about a half hour later I hit a cattle guard when leaving the Reservation there is some fresh gravel on the right and off in the distance is the beginning of Winnemucca Dry Lake. There are some big rock formations and a series of roads and some head east into the mountains. What mountains are those and where do they go? My Nevada map shows them as the Sahwave and Trinity Ranges. My California map shows them as the Nightingale, Seven Troughs and Trinity. I just want to know whats between there and Lovelock and are there roads the whole way? Any cool spots to stop at? Creeks, mines........anything? Keep in mind I drive an almost stock, full size Chevy truck (4x4) and I am going with my 15 year old boys.We want to do a little campin',explorin' and shootin'. What maps cover the area? Any info would be a big help.

The range on the right is called the Limbo range. Head east over the top to some great chuckar hunting. There are a bunch of seeps (springs) on the east side of the range. Once on the valley floor southeast is Nightingale, east is Seven Troughs, and North is the Blackrock Desert. A fullsize 4x4 truck will get you anywhere in the area. Take penty of provisions. Afternoon thunderstorms can make the area slick as snot. 4x or not you will get stuck :( (trust me on that one) Have Fun !

Me and the kids went out to the Blackock area last weekend, just an overnighter and on the way back, just befor entering the Res land again we took a left .Then went out behind one of those big ass rocks and let them do a little shootin' befor we got back. Directly east of the road on the next Range I could see pieces of roads going over the mountain and of corse thought " I wonder whats over there?" I assume you end up in Lovelock. Do you know of a good map that shows that area? Any idea how high those mountains are? We are headed back up there not next weekend but the week after. Thanks for the info.

I've been from Empire (Gerlach) to Winemucca via dirt roads. We were out there fighting fires and decided to take a short cut to Winemucca. The roads were really good we were doing 40-50 mph on them.... The road skirted the southern end of the black rock desert. There were lots of spurs off of it.

I seen that road from Empire to Winn. I think the sign said its 98 or 89 miles to Winnemucca. As soon as you get on that road there are some small roads to the right that go off into the hills but again , I dont know where they go. I've only got one Nevada map. But I do want to hit that road soon!

Im sure there are some good canyons to be crawled out there, all it takes is some time go explore. Be best on a dirt bike first so you could really cover some ground. Yeah its probably 90 miles of dirt road and nobody out there.

Not really for crawling, more for sight seeing.

east of the loimbo range are a nummber of old mining ruinsand eventuallt lovelock. sough of limbo is the nightingale range-- MGL mine and over on the east side, blue wing cow camp, jessup, etc. all fine but very remote areas to explore.
from gerlach, head east past frog pond and trego hot springs, then sulphur and eventually winnemucca or lovelock, depending which way u turn.
