: What should I expect?

I bought a 07 CTD(5.9L) with auto trans. I wanted a 6 speed but it was one of the compromises I made to my wife. It will be towing my samurai and 4wheelers. sometimes with a cab-over camper. For the present time I am not planing any performance mods.

What should I expect from this tranny? Will it hold up? Are there any resonably priced mods I can have done to make it more durable?

The 6 speeds manuals aren't holding up very well. They are good until about the time your warranty runs out. The cost of a rebuilt or a new one could feed a small village in Africa for years.

If you don't drive it like a cop car then you should be fine. Get your ATF flushed, not just changed, every 25K miles. This is not something you can do in your driveway, and it will run you about $100 each time. If you start modifying for more power, expect your tranny to suffer.

IIRC, if you're going to start flushing the new tranny...keep in mind that you better keep flushing it and not just draining the TC and/or dropping the pan.

I know of two people who had their ATs flushed and then just replaced ATF in the TC/pans and then flushed their transmissions A LONG time after the initial flush. This "may" have led their having blocked passages and other AT problems.

I know a lot of people who say that if an AT has 70-100K miles +, don't have it flushed...just change out the ATF in the TC and pan. But since yours is brand new...I couldn't foresee that kind of problem.

I get my '99 Ford (4R100) flushed every 25K miles and it has 350K miles of towing on it. I know those results aren't typical, but some of it has to do with flushing.

Thanks for the replies. The trans flush every 25K will definitely be on my to do list.
