I have a Dana 44 from an 81 Cherokee Cheif. I am going to use it to swap to solid axle on my Nissan. There are a few things I have to do to it before I can start my swap. It is a 6 lug with manual hubs and no vacuum anything. It's leaf under sprung and does not have the bolt on steering knuckle.

One is, I need to go through the brakes. this 44 has single piston calipers. I would like to switch to dual piston calipers. What do I need to do or what truck do I have to salvage them from? Or does anyone know if I can bolt my Nissan brake system to this axle?

The other question I have has to do with the Hi-Steer for the spring-over I plan on doing. Can I use the knuckles off another truck? What truck do I need to look for to get the knuckles? I know I have to buy the kit, but I just don't want to buy the knuckles as well (at least not new).

I need to stay 6 lug through all of the changes that is the only thing I have to stay with. Thanks for your help.

why go to two piston calipers? I'm sure somebody could figure it out but whats the point. stock D44 brakes were put under fullsize trucks for years with single piston calipers. you might have a problem with your master cylinder not moving enough fluid though. As for lines just buy some american lines and then put new ends on the stock hard lines.
If you mean you need flat top knuckles and dont have them you can swap from any other D44, right guys?

thanks RockKiller. I am trying not to change the master cylinder. I am hoping that there is a chevy caliper out there. As for lines, I don't mind having them made with different ends.
Just so you know, I did try the search button. It did not provide what I was looking for. If you were able to find the answers I am looking for than you are a better person than me.

Chevy's used the same single piston calipers as Waggies/Cherokees. Stick with them as they've been stopping much heavier trucks than your Nissan.

As for knuckles you can find the flat tops under '74-77 full size Jeeps. Also Chevy's have flat tops on both sides up until '78. After that only the driver's side is flat top. All 44 knuckles are interchangable, but watch the spindle stud count. Some Fords are five stud and Scouts use eight studs. Did you search on hi steer? That should provide you with the info you're looking for. Also search the Jeep forum.
