So I'm in the market for a road bike. Don't get me wrong still love to mountain bike, put in a 35 mile ride last Saturday, but with life so damn busy it just seems like it would be nice to tear out of my garage for a few hours on the streets and get a fast workout in rather than driving out to the dirt. Plus it'll help me get my endurance up.
So what bikes do you guys recommend. I've checked out the Spec. Allez triple and the Trek Alpha 1500, going to take them on 15 min demos to check them out.
Also thinking about going with the spec. tricross.
I just want something with less drag on the streets. Aiming for right around 1g, it would be great to find something used, I'm hovering over craigslist, but really don't know what I should be looking for.
Thanks for any help.

I'd grab some road tires, gear up a few teeth, and just use a mt. bike. *shrug*
I was running Specialized's city tires at 100psi on an Ellsworth Truth, that was fun. :) Very fast.

There's no need for a good amount of the gear on my mountain bike, my old bike is eventually going to be a dedicated SS, so I'm looking for something light and quick. Might as well do something right once.
Thanks for the input though.
Keith where you at!
I ended up getting a used cyclocross. I ride it on the street and trails. Take it up Mt Hamilton now and then...

Yeah I looked at those, but found a '07 cannondale CAAD9 with a carbon fork and steerer, carbon seat post all 105 components except for an ultegra rear deralier and an ultegra rear cassette on craigslist for 1200.
It's nearly new, ridden twice or so. Retail is 1600 before all the upgrades. Too good of a deal for me to pass up, picked it up yesterday. Now if I only had the time to take it out.

The only issue with that is if your rims can handle it. I have seen MTB rims crack and start to split from people running high pressure skinny tires on them. Make sure you do not go over the rim's maximum pressure, most have it on the label. This is more important for XC disk rims because the rim sidewalls are not as strong because they do not need to compensate for braking forces so they are made to be lighter but that also equates to slightly weaker than a VBrake rim.

I was assuming he had a set of rims and tires and just "dopped out" the MTB treads and locked in the street wheels to ride on the pavement.... I don't think I know anyone that would actually swap tires back and forth on a set of rims.... maybe I'm wrong:confused:

I did it for a while but it's a pain so I just ride my "boggers" on the street and everyone can hear me coming as I pass them :grinpimp:
29er wheels just cost to much to have two sets so I definately want a road bike but nothing expensive. I've put 50 miles on my 29x2.25 knobies just this week so far and that's all commute miles.
