Couldn't find one myself, so used two, one for in, one for out, and a covered master cutoff switch

Find someone who sells meyer snowplows. The left and right tilt is controlled by a momentary three way switch.

A SPDT (single pull double throw) switch can be used to switch 1 line to two different points. This kind of switch can be used for many purposes such as turning something on or off. We have this type of switch available in a momentary configuration

Switch Features for Toggle Switches

A momentary (ie. mom-off-mom) switch will sit in a centre position and when you activate it the switch will be activated for as long as you hold the switch handle. When you release the handle the switch will disconnect the circuit again. This switch can be very handy for activating switch machines and other solenoid activated devices.
Some switches have a centre off position (on-off-on). These switch allows you to switch between one point and two points however you can also leave both points turned off by placing the switch in the center off position. This type of switch can be handy for switching power between 2 power packs and a block. The center off means you can have Pack A, Pack B or no power connected.

any parts store will have, or can get, a SPDT centre off momentary switch

Any decent hardware store, or Lowes (home improvement wharehouse, thats were I got my last one, in the electrical department).

If you strike out there, try the electronic geek parts stores, or you may get lucky at Radio-Shack (they got them out there??)

I have a related question that is not worht starting a post over...

How do you actually hool the switch up to the winch? I mean, you dont have to cut off and strip a winch remote I assume. How do you actually wire off the winch?

Muchos gracias!

Just a suggestion - but if you can find a hand held controller to use in the cab - DO IT!

I had a spare winch hand controller that I hard wired into the solenoid. I then left 8' or so of cable on the hand controller in the cab. IMHO this was far better than a dash controller, since it let me use the the controllr in the cab, or hand it to someone out either side of the cab, or even stand up front so I can see the cable spooling back in (making it long enough to reach back up to the winch would be even better).

How about just buying one of these?http://www.ramsey.com/accessories_wireless.html
:D Kinda pricey though.

No worries mate, I'm not that dumb...in fact, I can be quite clever.

http://www.rightcoastcrawler.com/billaVista/8274/Dcp_4018.jpg

Here's how it works:
Fused 12V+ from battery comes in on #1.

When the cover is raised and the master switch closed, 12v+ flows along #2 to the first (winch cable in) switch.

If that first (winch in) switch remains un-activated, 12v+ flows to the last (winch cable out) switch along #3.

However, when the winch in switch is activated, 12v+ is cut off from the winch out switch. In this manner, the winch cannot be simultaneously powered in and out.

When the winch in switch is pressed, power flows to the appropriate solenoid (S terminal of lower left solenoid) along green wire #4.

When the winch out switch is pressed, power flows to the appropriate solenoid (S terminal of lower right solenoid) along brown wire #5.

The whole thing is simply shut down by closing the cover on the guarded switch

I agree. I originally had the factory setup... a remote socket on the plastic solenoid cover. That was it.

I then replaced it with a SPDT momentary (on-off-on) switch. That lasted about two weeks. You can't see to reel in that last three feet of cable over ANY hood, you can't lean out of reach of the switch for any reason while winching, and you can't rewind the cable on the drum after a pull by yourself, since you can keep the cable piling neatly while holding down a switch inside the cab.

Version 3.0:
Kept the same toggle switch as before, but reinstalled the socket for the remote inside the cab. This way I can have the remote plugged in for the whole trail ride without having to do things like tie the wire around the antenna and feed it across the hood into the cab...

Only problem left it that I would like the wire for the remote to be about 3 feet longer. A 12-15 footer doesn't reach more than about 3 feet past the winch, whichi s plenty until you're trying to wind the cable in by yourself.

Bill,
why couldnt you get a proper switch from where you got all those other switches?
or did you just want to do it the hard way?

I remember seeing Brad Kilby with some winch switches with the covers at the cal4wd convention in Visalia earlier this year. They were at his booth and looked like heavy duty mil spec switches. try onboardair.com

Was doing it quick before a run, and I couldn;t find a suitably rated, HD rocker, just the 2 singles. The covered switch comes with a NATO stock number :D but there aren't any rockers where it came from.

or did you just want to do it the hard way?

I think you know the answer to that
:flipoff2:

BTW - I also have a remote as well, of course. With a nice long cord- HINT: The remote cord needs 3 wires...just like an outdoor 3 prong grounded extension cable that comes in nice bright colours with nice heavy duty sheathing!! Cheap and any damn length you want ...hey look - my remote is 50' long :smokin:
