Here is a little history of my build up of a 00 Tacoma. Started out with a V6 5speed with 60k that had a cheapy rancho lift kit w/chrome light bars in the rear. Purchased this truck from the prior owner for 14.5k which at the time seemed like a good deal for a low milage Tacoma. Here is what the trucked like when first bought in October of 06.

http://www.villagephotos.com/image.asp?id_=18740699 Image Broken till I get home

Steps in the build
1. Busted the crap out of the chrome running boards. What a shame.
2. Removed the Chrome light bars in the rear
3. Installed a Uniland CB w/ Wilson 1000 antenna
4. Transmission went out 2 weeks after getting the truck. Felt like I was teaching someone how to drive a clutch from first gear. Replaced with a transmission from Marlin Crawlers. First one would not come out of reverse with out a little playing with shit. Currently the second one grinds in third so I have a third one waiting for install.

Here is where I started documenting it a little better with pictures

First order placed for parts
So lets have a running tally that I can cry too.
Front bumper 509
rear bumper 300
skid plates 200
front ARB 750
#20 Co2 tank on loan for free
arb manifold kit 69
80psi arb regulator 39
super bracket 59
ultimate regulator 104
rock lights 89
wiring setup 100
Transmission 900

$2219 + 900 dollars for marlin transmission

Pulling front diff to drop off at the gear shop……
After dropping the bent up skid plates we dropped the drain plug and saw big chucks of metal attached to the unit. The pieces looked like teeth from the ring gear.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/truck16.jpg

I can admitted I freaked out since I would have to buy a new gear and nobody but toyota carries 3.91's. So I placed a order for 4.56's gear package from Porc and a rear ARB which I will explain in a bit.

We got the front diff dropped with no problem after popping the cv's. The dread allen nut was easy since autozone carried a 12 mm allen on a 1/2 socket. Just slide the unit out towards the front with no problems. I was hesitant to open up the front diff since I didnt know how hard it would be to put back together. But fuck it I was curious. Turns out I had just broken some of the spider gears but the rest of the unit looked perfect. The spider gears wouldn’t have mattered since I was replacing the carrier with a front locker. Being a newbie I misunderstood someone and order the front instead of the rear.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/truck30.jpg
Opps already placed order for gears and another locker.

But in the end I did find a way to justify the order. If I ever did blow a gear out then I would have to pay toyota way to much money for a gear set. I'm guessing it would run about the same as a fr/rr set with install kits from Porc. So screw it pay the money now so if I do ever blow a gear its cheaper and easier to find a replacement set.

So currently I would have to pay for the front and rear to be regeared at same time well I thought why pay twice for the rear to get shit installed into it when I can just pay once. I was already planning on a locker in the rear during the fall but that was before I decided to regear .So I bought the locker at the same time to save 200-350 dollars later.

Plus its much easier to sell a diff with 4.56 w/ARB then 3.91 w/ARB. 3.91 is just a funky gearing. And after the units are done being regeared I will see if I can sell the 3.91 from the front diff and I think 3.73 from the spare 3rd on the national board or someone local.

On a shiny note: Received bumpers and new skid plates

Problems after receiving some parts for vendor
wrong co2 tank bracket. I was told it would fit a 20lb tank even though it was made for 15 but after recieving the unit I had to look up the size of co2 tanks. 10,15 are 6.5inches in diameter and 20's are 8inches. Clearly not going to fit. shipping back to allprooffroad. They are going to refund shipping cost and send out correct one. No biggie

But while waiting for the lockers and other stuff to arrive I got done to priming parts.

Painted some Just cheap paint since I will be beating the crap out of it.

Installed some of the rock lights

Custom brackets for the middle

Welded this one with a HF welder upside down so it sucks

Installing bumpers

http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/feb10/05.jpg

Allprooffroad bumpers require the frame to be cut back 3” on 98-2000 Tacoma’s
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/feb10/17.jpg

Had to make a custom mount since I was never sent them till 2 months later from Allprooffroad. Dam them
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/feb10/21.jpg
Cut to the lines then welded a nut on the back of the plate. Then welded the plates into the frame.

After mounting the bumper I ran into problems with the bumper rubbing on the tires since the prior owner had a 3” BL and they said it would be fine with 32” tires. NOPE

Rubbing

Original design

3” cut back.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/feb10/30.jpg

New design w/hoops moved forward too.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/feb10/38.jpg

Had to upgrade the skidplate on the bumper due to crappy design. I bent the hell out of the 1/8in they had. Time for ¼ steel I had in the garage and now I can get to the bolts for the winch easly.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/Skidplate.JPG

Also add a power steering cooler since mine started to fad when the fluid would heat up to much. Bought a transmission cooler from Napa meant for a tow rig.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/Powersteeringcooler.JPG

Bought Tube doors from Traxman25
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-1/1139857/f28.jpg
These doors rock. Best 250 dollars I spent for the doors and the quick release hinges.

Instead of going the ARB compressor way for the air looks I decided to go for a CO2 tank setup.
Not to bad of a kit from powertank. The 100psi safety valve is a nice little feature.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/ARBCO2kit.JPG
The air regulator really isn’t needed since the valve will make a puttering sound when its release air so I just back off the regulator a little to get the right pressure. I do this before I activate any of the ARB’s.

Front ARB.

Air supply setup.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/Airmanifold.JPG
The rear ARB lines are run in a fuel line. Tucked up near the top of the frame.

Found a place to do the ff/rr gears for 250 dollars. I did have a solid sleeve installed in the rear. I did have a problem with the front diff. Either a pinion bearing went out or a crush sleeve failure after 20+ miles 4wheeling. The shop is having a custom solid sleeve made for the front since no one offers it.

Cosmetic damage to ARB from pinion. No damage to the R&P somehow.

Before going to Farmington we decide to install a M8000 Winch to my truck but turns out the rancho suspension was shot from hell. So here comes another 1000 for a OME heavy duty kit. Replaces all components: front and rear stuff.

Pressing the front coil-overs was a pain in the ass till I learned a way to do it. Any shops wanted 50 a piece to do.
http://www.nmtorra.com/truckbuild/Pressing%20coils.JPG

The springs in the rear were fun also to do but the lift was installed in one day.

Finally pics with the front skid plate off. Minus the tube doors that are a quick swap.

I'm new at 4 wheeling and the build just started adding up. I hated not having a locker. Plus its my DD for now. A SAC is planned in two years with a diamond hi-pinion 9" up front and stuff. but first I need a crawler unit.
