Will earlier taco tranny work for newer taco?

I have a 2001 tacoma 2.7L 4 cylinder automatic and am converting it to 4wd. I have everything I need besides the tranny and transfer case. My question is can I use a 4x4 tranny and transfer case from an older tacoma in my 01?

if it is a 2.7 you should have no problem. you will have to do some wireing to short cut the NSS

don't forget the mt computer if changing to 5spd.

So if I went that route should I just buy a nss off of that year tacoma or is there an easier way?
