Hey all you Jeepers, i have a tranny questions for ya, I have the basic knowledge on trannys but my friend owns a 94 jeep wrangler 4.0L with a 5spd, i believe its an AX15? tranny? I am wondering if its possible to take off the tail housing w/out dropping the tranny, we already have the T-case off.
What happend is his front driveshaft caps broke off sending his d-shaft into his tranny busting a whole in the tail housing only. I know you can do this pretty easy in other trannys but how about this one--Seems like nobody knew this answer in the "non hardcore" section---Thanks Dan

You can but it makes more sense to go ahead and pull the trans.....you have detents that are a bear to assemble unless the trans is on a bench.
Also difficult is the re-assembly of 5th gear. If the transfer is out, you're mostly there, go ahead and yank it, make sure it's ALL OK.

it's pretty easy.
Pull the shifter & the spring plungers from the top.
take out the 3/8 allen head plug from the back & the 1/2 bolt under the shifter.
Stick a pair of needlenose in and pull out the shift rail that was behind the 3/8 plug.
take out the plug, spring, ball on the pass. side should be about a 5mm allen head.

now take all housing bolts loose & it should pull straight back!
