: School me on H1 rims vs. DOT
DZLCJ7 04-13-2007, 04:44 PM I am looking at H1's for the jeep now that I have a 60/14b. I occasionally run it on the road. I am still confused on the legality of them. I know that most beadlocks arn't DOT approved but just wanted to know about the H1's
-thanks
KrazYJ 04-13-2007, 05:16 PM Well considering they have dot numbers on them i'd say it's good to go....but i'll let others chime in here
89breaker 04-13-2007, 09:02 PM Two thoughts on this one:
One camp says they are legal because they have a DOT stamp.
The other camp says they aren't legal because they are stamped military use only.
Your pocketbook, your ride, you decide.
Dhmoto111 04-14-2007, 11:40 AM are they worried about them coming apart or something?
Davethorik 04-14-2007, 12:02 PM I'll just ask you this question...how many tickets have you been given pertaining to the DOT legality of your wheels? You're most likely to get just about any other kind of ticket first, if there is even a citable offense here. I know this isn't the cold hard DOT facts, but this is the real world.
Then again, last night I did get a $40 parking ticket for leaving the keys in the ignition of my truck parked on the street by my buddies house.
89breaker 04-14-2007, 03:20 PM Hell, I wouldn't sweat it. As a matter of fact, I am getting some next week so I will let you know if the cops in my area even care.
downsideup 04-15-2007, 08:20 PM That is the last thing i am going to look at. Run them, the only way you would have any trouble is if you pissed off one of our traffic nazzis. I would rather have someone running a H1 rim than half the jelopies that are out there. At a technical standpoint they would be illegal due to the " Military use only" stamp. Run em. I'm gonna
JeffHPK5 04-16-2007, 06:31 PM Hell , I bet that 99% of the police officers out there couldn't recognize a faux "street-lock" from a real bead lock if there life depended on it.
Unless you get pulled over by a wheeler/cop there not going to look twice at a set of H1's, that's assuming your not running 4psi!
A friend of mine has ran weld on bead locks for years on the street with not even a warning , and the things are painted safety glow pink!

BEAD LOCK LEGALITY
Regarding the legality of conventional bead locks in California, I contacted very helpful Public Affairs Officer Chris Johnson. Now, understanding that the California Vehicle Code book is very big (over 1,600 pages!), and has many changes every year, Officer Johnson did his best, with the help of "Commercial" officers, NITSA and DOT to answer my question:
"Are conventional bead locks against the law?" His qualified answer is, "As best I know, no, conventional bead locks are not illegal."
Officer Johnson and I both are interested in learning more from you. Please call him (714, 567-6000) or me, if you have been cited specifically for bead locks or know the exact facts for someone who has. In defence of both of us, rumours are unacceptable. We need the facts, ma’am, just the facts.
Staun Internal BeadLocks are literally invisible with the exception of the second valve stem and that also appears to be legal. They use conventional inner tubes, so as of this writing, neither Officer Johnson nor I see any "street legal" problems with the Staun Internal BeadLock™ system.
KiGrind 04-17-2007, 06:44 PM Unless you live in Californazia, no one will give a shit. If its not a DD I say run um, just check the bolts. Thats the only thing I hear besides not being balanced... the bolts will losen up apparently. Dunno.

I'm guessing "Officer Johnson" didn't want to answer this phone call, and there is no way he has the entire 1600 page code memorized either, gave Staun some B.S. answer, and they probably are illegal, it is California after all. That's something I'd check out personally.
DZLCJ7 04-20-2007, 02:47 PM I think I am going to run them. I don't think it will be a problem. Worst case, I just end up putting them on my woods truck. Now the big question is...what is the going price for a set of H1's and where is the best place to get them?

I would run them don't think you'll have a problem with the law. The going price around here is about $200 a set would'nt give much more than that for them. If you have a daully front axle they bolt right on if not you'll have to recenter them.
