I have found a 70s model 3/4 ton ford. It has a 390 with a 4 speed tranny and divorced t case. What t case is this?? It has a dana 60 rear, and a low pinion d44 front??? is this a heavy duty 44?? if so what is stronger about it. also what gearing should these axles be? I looked on the tags but couldnt make out the numbers.
the front has a cylinder on the axle like a hydro assist, is this an early version of power steering.
I can get the truck for $750
would this be a good price????????

A 4wd that makes it to the end of the street is worth $750+ in my area, but nearly worthless elsewhere.
390 is probably a 360, a solid truck engine, too expensive to rebuild, 4spd is bulletproof, probably an NP205 also bulletproof, could be a D24 if its an early truck still a strong case. The front end holds weight, and has larger than 1/2ton bearings, but for power and lockers, it has normal sized shafts. Do you have the open knuckle disk or the closed knuckle drum? The closed knuckle front end has shit for turning radius, and is nearly impossible to swap to disk brakes. The Hydro assist is JUNK don't patch it, just find a 78-79 F250 4wd box and swap it in at the first sign of trouble (at $750 I'm sure its already there).

the front end is open knuckle( upper lower balljoint ) with disc brakes. I have a44 HP with weld on radius arm mounts, I should be able to swap the outers from the 3/4 ton???
thanks agin for the response.

What are your plans for the truck? The HP diff will likely cause driveshaft interference unless you lift the piss out of it. The outer knuckles will fit the 1/2ton diff IIRC, but you will have the mix and match shafts, the 3/4t inners are longer. What are you going to do for front suspension?

The HD44 has huge lockouts, held on by six large allen bolts. It will have a spacer between the hub and the lockout's chrome ring. Diameter is 4 1/2"

Still trying to decide if i want to get it.
all I would do is strip it and use it for parts. I am going to start a buggy within the next year and thought for the price it might be a good start.

I bought mine to wheel, not because I needed a 3/4ton, and soon wished I'd have bought a half ton, simpler, more used parts, cheaper new parts. It worked out in the long run though, because I swapped a cummins into it, and am planning a crew cab conversion, but still never really wheeled it.

Probably a np-205, but it could be d-24 if its early enough. Same difference pretty much.
P.S. that 390 is really a 360.
