Well guys, the flood gates were open on two of the three areas so we did not have as much wheelin' as we would have liked. We did have the Rock Garden and the trails (which are VERY tough now :) ). I've got a few good wheelin' pics posted on our site but I thought you might be more interested in some of the carnage.... Disney is never as a loss for destruction. :D

I manage to kill another Dana 44 joint Sunday morning... Did not get to it fast enough, the stub shaft is toast! :(

Jayson is considering a run at ProRock next month when they come to town. Danny put up a course for him to play on. Waisted a 297 on the second pass! Both axle shafts destroyed as well. Made a real LOUD BANG!

Here is a cool 9 inch blow up... Broke the housing and spit the whole pinion and drive shaft!

Here someone took the alternate trail off of Ho Chi Mihn. It has a nasty slab of rock with a big drop off! Looks like they stabbed the brakes and did not let off. Full endo! Check out the front axle. Broke the housing in two!

Yea, Jayson waisted one of the new 760's. I'd say it is not much stronger than the old 297's. Mine was an old 297. I had almost a year on that joint. For around here, that's really good. I also have 27 spline stubs. So there is no reason for me to go for a stronger joint.

Alloy shafts and CTM's would probably have Jayson in real good shape on 36's or 37's. If he goes 38's, than I doubt even those would hold at Disney...

I think this is the same trail we took  My wife was shittin' her pants! That last 10-20 feet is a dooooozy. My buds Tacoma about went over. Didn't see it, but I guess the rear tires were off the ground...quite a ride :D Pics don't do it justice really.

Yep, that's the hill! There are no pictures that do justice in the woods! :D That's why I usually don't even bother posting any...

I like to take people down that hill on night runs. :D :D

But, I would not do that to anyone when it was wet like this weekend... ;)

I understand the Wagoner boys (Casey and Mark) climbed back up that..... However, it took them 45 minutes EACH!

I dont know about that....I think it would hold the 38's.....My buddy Rob has them on his Tacoma with 38's!

My carnage list from Disney this weekend.

Dana 44 front left side stub shaft
Dana 44 front left side inner shaft
Passenger side front fender flare
Passenger side front fender
Rear u-joint straps and ears are ground beyong repair
Front drive shaft bent
Both front YJ leafs are bent
Muffler has large new dent

That is all I've found so far.

I got in town Sunday night about 9pm and was back at camp with all but the passenger side fender damage by 10:30. I guess that's what I get for playing in the rock garden in the dark.

Cool! :D

Sounds like you came ready to play... :D

You guys probably had a great time after the traffic thinned out. With such a limited area not flooded, it got way to crowded on Sat and Sun.

P.S. - We don't count carnage at Disney, unless it makes a large POP sound or prevents the vehicle from traveling under it's own power... :p :D :D

Which joint did you have in the 44? 297 or 760? Got any pics?

Oooh! It defidently made a LOUD pop. The loudest axle pop I'd ever heard. I had the 760. The joint (minus caps) is still in great shape. It was dark but I think the outer went then the caps worked loose, then the inner got trashed. I had to pull the outer out the back side of the spindle. It was too messed up to come through the hole. I think a buddy was taking pics. I was too busy destroyin' parts. I'm going to get my sammy tonight (it's still on a double trailer at a buddys) the destroyed parts are in it. I'll take a couple of dig. pics tonight and mail them to someone to post since I'm still a newbie. :-)

I found a guy Monday morning with a complete shaft for a J10 pickup front D44 that I picked up for $25. It looked like it came over on the Mayflower and the joint was BBAADD. The inner shaft was about 3/4" shorter than my old one but enough of the splines seemed to bite in the carrier so I slapped it in and I was going. Worked all day. I'll probably take it out and get a real replacement and keep the short one for a spare for later use.

It was a great time. Mark- are you going to be there Sat and Sunday for CalRocks? I think I'll be there Saturday.

Yes I'll be there.
If Jayson enters, I'll be playing pit crew all weekend. I just happen to have a small machine shop in my garage, and I'm only 45 min away..... You can bet I'll be busy Saturday night. :)

I hope someone keeps track of broken axles during the competition. I bet we set a new record. :D

The 60 guys keep trying to get me to do full circle clips on my D44 joints. I just don't think it would help. Mine spits caps, but it breaks the lower portion of the cap OFF. On Jayson's, two caps were pushed out that way (stub shaft ends), and one had the end of the cap tore off (body and clip was still in place) on the inner side, with the other side of the trunion snaped off! It just looks like it would not gain much if any.

What's your thoughts?

I did tack weld the c-clips in on the other side (it's got a 760, after the 297 died at the end of last year). So far it's holding, but the clips did manage to break loose and have rotated with the caps. On the inner axle, those caps have made about 3/4 revolution so far...

I was going to try the tac weld thing this time, I was going to try to tack the ring in 2 places to maybe keep it from moving. I don't really think the joint was my problem. I think the ears on the stub just let go. I had the tire bound pretty hard and 5.89 gears with a 2.61 low range and the torque converter that is quite a bit of torque being applied to it. Also it is the first joint to crap out on me in 2 years. I've been having pretty good luck. I'd considered the CTM's but I think the alxe would be the weak link then.

Aren't most of the competitions held above and around the waterfall? If the gates aren't closed then I guess they'll move to the rock garden??????

You say you are going to extend your wheelbase? How much?
I'm looking are doing another 5.5. Just moving the flares back on the stock tub. That would give me a total of 90".

*chuckle* I remember back when everyone on the Sammy board was pushing people toward D44s with the like "You'll never break em under a sammy"... :D

Yea- anything can be broken if you abuse it long enough or hard enough. I've seen a guy break the housing on a 14 bolt. Part of whelin' is breaking parts. It is going to happen, how hard/often you wheel determins how much time you spend under/on your rig fixing and upgrading.

I'd still recommend the D44 swap to anyone though. Parts are common and can be swapped between all the variations so that almost any combination of width, bolt pattern, hub style, ratio, etc. needed can be had.

But there always has to be "the next step". You say this one mod and everthing will be perfect. Then you dream up another mod, and aother and another........

Well, a CTM is not going to last you 2 years. They don't have roller bearing.... If I took the time to replace mine every year, I don't think I would have a problem. At the moment, I'm still running 27 spline outers. I have yet to twist or break on of those. However, I've got a set of Chevy outers I'm considering changing over to.

I expect the courses will be spread over all three areas. Definatly rock garden and playground. There are even a few real nasty spots down on the river bed.

The problem is, the lake level is still 2' into flood pool. There is a real good chance that some gates will be open. That could cause a BIG problem for the competition! :( Jayson is trying to find out what they are going to do if the competition get's canciled. They may not give refunds on the $350 entry, or only roll it into the next event..

I'm only going another inch, to 85. I'm trying to keep the true Sami profile. I would like to get rid of some overhang on the rear, but I have too much fun with the Sami to streatch it too far! It's a Sami, it's supposed to be short... :D

Dr Evil - The D44 was considered indestructable before people started coming up with 100+:1 gearing or 800 LB drive lines! :rasta: The next step is 1 tons', and we REALLY don't want to go there! $$$$$ :)

Tack welding will help. Tack either the cap in 4 places (90 degrees apart), or a washer over the end of the cap. We used to TIG them to keep the heat down, but MIG on low will work fine. You'll be amazed at how much it'll help. I didn't do it on my 60 :D , but I thought about it.
