: 1979 Bronco 460 swaP QUESTION...MOTOR Mounts?
mgawat 04-15-2007, 12:01 PM Okay, I've got the original 400M out of the 1979 bronco and am getting ready to pull my donor 460's... one is out of a 1989 E350 van(needs rebuilkd) and the other mint one is out of a 1988 F450. The E350 one is fuel injected while the F450 one is carb'ed. I am planning on using the exhaust manifolds off the van engine onto the F450 one, if needed for space issues, and any for any other issues I have with the power steering .I'm sure I'll have enough parts to figure out. My main question has to do with the monting of the donor 460. I haVE a couple sets of L&L mounts for the existing motor mounts, a couple sets of 2wd 1979 Motor mounts, and the existing motor mount towers in each of the donor vehicles. I also have heard of the performace unlimited mounts which are supposed tro be much better than the L&L's due to less rubber and more even stress. I would love to hear from you folks who have done this on these choices, which one is best, and any other ideas I haven't found out about yet (I did see one guy, Northride, that's got a custom set for $225.00 but that is money I really don't have for something that's as good as something cheaper or, better, something I already have. Thanks in advance for all your inputs.
wetnsloppy4x 04-15-2007, 01:05 PM I used the L&L mounts for my 460 swap. My first 460 was a 73' Lincolin motor and the mounts worked fine. When I swapped in the 96' EFI 460 they worked just as well. I'm using the stock mount towers in the truck. I've read both good and bad about the L&L mounts. I've had good luck so far.
I am planning on using the exhaust manifolds off the van engine onto the F450 one, if needed for space issues.
This won't work. EFI and carbed exhaust manifolds are NOT interchangeable. They raised the exhaust ports ~1/2" on the EFI heads but left the bolt holes in the same place. When you put carbed manifolds on an EFI headed engine (or vicea versa) you get a severe port mismatch and an equally big exhaust leak. Just an FYI.
Sorry, I've always run headders. I don't know which manifolds will fit between the frame rails without mods.
masterbeavis 04-15-2007, 02:04 PM THe performance unlimited ones are the mouts I used. They look better on paper, but they require you to do some modifications to your towers.
If you look really hard, you can see what you have to do in order to make them work. http://inlinethumb21.webshots.com/4564/1035316920034517124S600x600Q85.jpg (http://rides.webshots.com/photo/1035316920034517124JdFGTV)
The passenger car manfiolds on the passenger side will require to clearance the frame. If you use the truck manifolds, you should clear OK. I have no experience with the van manifolds.
The van brackets are the ones I would use. It should have a saginaw pump, and will clear the steering box alot better.
fordman1978 04-15-2007, 03:01 PM check summit racing i know they have 460 mounts specifically for putting a 460 in place of a 351m/400
1tonF100 04-15-2007, 03:30 PM im running the L&L conversion mounts with their shorty headers
skipped_Link 04-15-2007, 03:45 PM I use 390 2 bolt mounts, ($9 at napa) elongate the mounting holes just a little & they will bolt to the 460 block at an angle & fit right in your stock tower,
JoshTurner 04-15-2007, 04:39 PM The Performance Unlimited ones are the way to go....Im going on 15 years on mine & in a 2nd truck...

mgawat 04-15-2007, 04:43 PM some folks were trying to get me to use the 2wd stock motor mounts but the most obvious problwem I see is that they require a crossmember to bolt to which is missing on the 4wd trucks

Someone used those on the truck I just got. They cut of the bottom and ran a plate back to the bottom of the frame. It would work ok if they knew how to weld :shaking: I am gonna change them out to the L&L set up most likely.
broncomania79 04-15-2007, 06:47 PM L & L here. so far so good. van and truck manifolds will work . car manifolds will hit the frame rail . carb and efi heads are different so intake and exhaust will not interchange.
masterbeavis 04-15-2007, 07:09 PM Those mounts are also the style that advanced adapters needs for its conversion to work. I didnt like the looks of all that clutter, so I went with the performance unlimited mounts. THe are $40 per side. If you dont mind modifying your perches, these are the way to go.

mgawat 04-16-2007, 09:18 AM anyone have any experience with North Country Specialties set-up.?..I've got alot of glowing reports on these being the best on other websites.
wvmudder1 04-19-2007, 07:00 PM I used the new conversion brakets from Trans-Dapt, Summit Racing carries them, I bought the poly ones (they also sell a solid mount). I couldnt get them to line up at all until I loosened the transmission mount bolts on the cross member and they fell right into place. I can't speak for reliability though, i'm still in the process of making my cylinder mounts for steering.
blazinchuck 04-24-2007, 07:21 AM check out Trucks TV...they are doing the same swap in a bronco. They had motor mounts that bolted right in for a 460,Chuck
u2slow 04-24-2007, 09:35 AM Here's what I learned from the swap that was done at my old work place....
#1 Passenger car manifolds don't fit.
#2 80s/90s truck 460 engine mounts work with minimal modification.
