Does anyone have any experience with 80% FAL receivers? What machining is needed to finish these up? Are they worth it?

I've seen a couple of them on Gunbroker recently and got interested. I've got a buddy who is an experienced machinist who would help me out.

Thanks.

Link?
Photo?

I had not heard about them. Be easier to tell from a photo.
Do you know is it just drilling and tapping or is this just a solid casting?

I don't have the photos but here's a link to one of the auctions.

It looks like just some drilling and tapping but I contacted the seller to see what is necessary.

What do you think?

The charging handle slot needs to be milled, barrel threads cut, takedown hole cut, holes for the ejector block and locking shoulder drilled, recess for the locking shoulder head milled.

It's hard to tell about the rails in the receiver.
I have never held a bare 100% receiver. Have fired, and cleaned a FAL but don't really remember much details.

The photos don't really look like more then a bare cast. An Entreprise is 250$ for a price comparrison

Side shot of a 100% to compare.

Hmm, I'm thinking it may not be worth it at this point. This'll be my first FAL and (right now) I just want it to go together smoothly. I'll probably just pick up a DSA and keep my eyes open for a good deal on Gunbroker for another receiver. Probably get my name on that 12-mile long waiting list for a DCI too. I've got a notion that I'd also like to build a FAL carbine that's not much longer than my AR....

Remember FALFILE members get a discount at DSA

Yup, that's probably the way I'm going. Looking at a Type 1 without the carry handle cut....

Although pricey, you cant go wrong with DSA - I love mine.

this shows the inside, looks mostly finished...I would say the cocking rail slot and the bbl threads are gonna be the hard part...

and slightly off topic but still close...

this website has info on building your own firearms and offers some parts and 1911 frames(60-80%)...

Yeah does look better...hell for $40 I would jump on it.
The BBL threads, while slightly uncommon you can get a tap in the size.
The milling of the slot would be the difficult part.
