Sweet build up!!! :smokin:I love the cage and rear hack. You've givin' me plenty of ideas of my 98 when it goes under the knife for the next round of mods.
But you must be one short legged bastid:flipoff2:......No way would I be able to use those two left shifters in my XJ or let alone sit comfortably in the driver seat.
53guy 07-15-2008, 12:47 PM But you must be one short legged bastid:flipoff2:..
He isn't, but it sure is odd that he's got so many sticks next to his....... :flipoff2: Eric loves the sticks....
pipehitter155 07-15-2008, 01:16 PM not as much as you Nick...:flipoff2:

i actually rest my right leg on the left stick...in the pic they are in neutral...when they are in low they are almost against the seat so they are some what out of the way....no big deal, adapt and overcome....:D
94toytruck 07-15-2008, 08:02 PM When in the hell are you going to come drag that fawker over some rocks with us Eric???
pipehitter155 07-16-2008, 04:22 PM i will be up there laborday weekend....you comin out....
94toytruck 07-16-2008, 10:37 PM Maybe alot depends on what I get done till then. I got 2 cages to build and am expecting to have something to fix after takeover:laughing:
pipehitter155 07-17-2008, 07:29 AM well get to work you slack ass....i would say you can ride with me, but my cage is pretty tight suffice to say your fat ass won't fit...
94toytruck 07-17-2008, 05:08 PM Now you know why I went Exo:flipoff2:
pipehitter155 07-21-2008, 07:24 PM got my alcans today they look pretty gnarly...

i will get them installed tomorrowed and get the xj buttomed up tomorrow....
HOPEFULLY:shaking:
DESracing 07-23-2008, 03:28 PM How did the rear springs turn out?
pipehitter155 07-23-2008, 04:26 PM ummmm not so well, they're about an 1 inch too short with no weight on them....so i need to figure something out....when i called alcan i asked for a set of springs for an XJ w/ 6.5 inches of lift and the center drilled 4 inches back...i'm gonna play with them a little tomorrow and see what happens...i was doing it by myself yesterday, and having a hard time....also does the big bushing go in the front and small bushing in the shackle...pretty sure i had the spring in there right, but who knows...
xjdoug 07-23-2008, 10:06 PM also does the big bushing go in the front and small bushing in the shackle...pretty sure i had the spring in there right, but who knows...
Ding ding! you got it right!
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 11:41 AM yeah i got it right....i was actually kidding....anyway...i got them all buttomed up and here what i got:

xjemily 07-24-2008, 11:44 AM i think alcan misinterpreted your need and made a boo boo,put those others you had back in and return those if you can?
94toytruck 07-24-2008, 11:48 AM Wow that sucks Eric:eek:
Just to rub salt in the wound I'm leaving to wheel right now. I'll send you some pics sunday night:flipoff2:
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 11:53 AM thanks Eric...i'm not sending them back to Alcan it cost me $115 to ship them here...they messed up not me...I'm sure they will work with me, i have heard nothing but good thing about Alcan. So far they have been really good.
hadfield4wd 07-24-2008, 11:59 AM Will they settle? I've had springs like that and they settled to a good angle. Put the weight of the xj on them.
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 12:09 PM i did...full weight even hit the shackle with a dead blow...stock xj's are about 48 7/8 inches long (confirmed by EOR MFG yesterday), these are 47 1/2 roughly eye to eye...about an 1 1/2 difference which is about what i need...
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 01:08 PM talked to Charles at Alcan and he said that need to get the tires on and go romp it around....sooooo, i guess i will be off to Crozet here in the next week or so to test this thing out...
proskier101 07-24-2008, 01:10 PM stupid question, when you measure eye to eye, is that following the arch or just a straight line??
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 01:39 PM that was eye to eye...which according to charles is the 'wrong' way to measure a spring...you gotta take arch, center, and all that into account..here's the correct way:

pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 02:05 PM Put the wheels on it and see what happens after you wheel it some. Just make sure you dont have the shackles to tight.
shackles too tight???? probably just do them by hand, don't wanna ruin the bushings...
53guy 07-24-2008, 02:06 PM Hell, if they are too short or if they're too tall or whatever, its not the end of the world. Sure it sucks, but Eric, dude, you've definately got the skills to refab a shackle mount further forward. Better angle, add or subtract height, make it stronger...
53guy 07-24-2008, 02:07 PM shackles too tight???? probably just do them by hand, don't wanna ruin the bushings...
Yup, just until they squeeze the poly........:flipoff2:
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 02:31 PM yeah but that takes work and really am just too lazy and got other shit to do to the jeep to get it ready for rausch...
53guy 07-24-2008, 02:32 PM dude, when I get my licence back, I'd be more than glad to come help ya.
pipehitter155 07-24-2008, 02:39 PM cool sounds good....
My Rubicon Express springs looked pretty much the same when I put em on. They have settled out enough that they are at least sitting in the right direction now (albeit by just a degree or two).
Re-working the shackle boxes is in my future.. I would guess its in yours as well.

I can now die a happy man.:D You'll like it there. Just imagine a bunch of BS around a campfire.
pipehitter155 07-25-2008, 11:56 AM today was pretty productive...got it sittin on all 4's; sits ass high but once the springs break i think it will be alright, front winch hooked up and spooled, check all the fluids, added more to the tcases (man that really sucks-the price you pay for a flat belly)....checklist before rausch:
hook up rear winch
spool rear winch
fix gauges
hook up KC lights
find carpet for inside:shaking:

I was surprised how much mine settled after a good crozet run.

I just cut up some remnants left over from the carpet we had layed in out old house in richmond. Was supposed to be temporary, 5 years ago.:shaking:
pipehitter155 07-27-2008, 01:04 PM well i got alot done today, tried to diagnose why my gauges quit working (no go there--still don't work)....think i'm just gonna put in some after market gauges anyway...also got some carpet from the PnP in hopes of disapating some of the heat from the engine and tranny (man does it get hot in there)...so here's how she is stand as of today:
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSC01553.jpg
also broke my camera shortly after this shot by slamming the hood on it on accident (go me dumbass)...she sits a little ass high but i think that go down after a run or two (at least thats what everyone says)...
Mr. Pickle 07-28-2008, 06:18 PM Hey Pipe, just read through the whole thread and the build was documented very well. Congrats on a sweet rig and what looks to be good friends who help a vet in need.
Thanks for putting your ass on the line to protect our country!
pipehitter155 07-28-2008, 08:22 PM thanks man...appreciate it!!!:smokin:
pipehitter155 07-29-2008, 12:57 PM got the rear winch hooked up and spooled with a 100' of cable....man i now know why i went to synthetic rope...i would have took a picture, but once again i'm a dumbass and decided to smash my camera in the hood...:shaking:

Some times my gauges quit working. I was told it is the sensor (vehical speed senor?) in the transmision. Its like 300 bucks to buy a new one but i think you can take it apart and clean it and that will fix it. I seen a write up in JP Magazine about it a few months ago. It was for the AW4 tranny.

I have seen this many times. Pull the cluster apart and inspect the printed circuit board. They have had issues.
pipehitter155 07-29-2008, 03:20 PM i've decided to say fuck it and buy some autometer gauges....fuel gauge, tranny temp, water temp, volt meter, etc...and then mount them on the on the cage or on the pass. side air bag area of the dash....now i just need to figure out how to hook the damn things up once i get them....

When it comes to installing the gauges they are super easy. The only trouble I had with any of them was getting out a plug in the block to put in the water temp sensor. Regardless they are very easy. Just make sure you match the right sender to your fuel gauge.

you mean the freeze plug....if so i've already got one pulled for a block heater, so i will just pull that one and install it in there....
Okie Terry 08-01-2008, 09:28 PM He likely means a plug that's threaded into the block.
They're in there pretty good.
If I remember correctly, one's for a knock sensor and the other goes to a water jacket.
I think it's the forwardmost plug on the d/s of the block.
I could be wrong.
I've done a lot since the last time I screwed around with the engine.
pipehitter155 08-04-2008, 12:59 PM been working on the missile the last couple of days...got the rear winch all done (man mounting the solenoid was a nightmare)....got some carpet so hopefully that will take care of the heat in the cab...probably just gonna try and fix these gauges for now and wait on the autometer ones...i put a new steering skid for the hydro assist ram...3/8 thick...hopefully that won't bend...

Ya that is what I am talking about. I know there are two threaded plugs but im not sure which one is the water jacked. I thought that both are. But what do I know, i couldnt even get them out.

you are correct and i still cant get mine out:mad3:any help on this would be appreciated. it just seems impossible
Okie Terry 08-04-2008, 02:45 PM Have you tried using the hot wrench?
Heat will usually do the trick.
The plugs are probably corroded in.

We got one out by using a torch but that motor was on a stand in the open. My 4.0 we were not that lucky.

pipehitter155 08-06-2008, 01:11 PM hmmmm haven't welded in forever, someone pointed out that the piston on my ram would take a beating at rausch....so i built this...please don't judge my welds it's been a while....

If our little one shows up in time, yup, but I guess its gonna depend on her and Liz. She's due on the 26th. If she's not popped by Rausch, then no, I can't rightly be 6 hours away when she goes into labor.
after rausch, i'm gonna cut all that skid off and make a whole new similar to yours Nick
I figured as much. You really added some flare into my skid by throwing that in, I'm sure you can come up with something similar for yours.

Grand_ZJ 08-10-2008, 08:31 AM How wide are you Eric? From outside of tire to outside, front and rear widths please:D
The skid for your steering ram looks like it should work great.
Your rig is looking real good. I'm sure the rear springs will flex better after a few wheeling trips.
So how do you like the having the rollcage mounted in front of the dash? I bought a used XJ cage for my MJ that has the same A-piller design. I wanted to go threw the dash, but don't want to lose my AC or heat. It's pretty tight getting in and out but once the cab has been extended for 2dr doors I'm hoping the 9" larger opening will make it better. My old and abused body just doesnt flex like it used to.

I can somewhat answer this one:flipoff2: His trailer is 82" between the fenders and it "almost fits between on the front, the rear will fit. Soooooo, 83-84 fr/82" rr. Im pretty sure on that one.
Thank god we never have to load it up again with no D-Shafts or sterring.:shaking:

Discuss???

are you really going to use 2"x.250 for the upper links too?

Xj in Va 08-23-2008, 04:56 PM Who will be helping you on the rear 4-link? I think I know a couple guys in VB that have done quite a few link projects. Pretty sure they now own a welding company. Let me know.

My 14's were quite the experience, but I'm very happy with them. Are you going dual or single triagulated?

The Axle end upper link mount are you going to add to that?
The tabs weld to the casting and to that piece of bent plate welded to the bridge?
I think your welds on the casting will snap then the weld from the bent plate to the tube will bend and rip, unless you make it stronger. do you have more pics of it?
pipehitter155 10-09-2008, 05:05 AM ash i will get more pics today....if it rips off its gonna take the whole housing with it also...i just showing how it looked welded onto the custom truss...
53guy 10-09-2008, 05:31 AM Hey Eric, you gonna be helping out Chris on the 18th? I'd love to see your POS if you are.

Xjcrawler736 03-06-2009, 12:21 PM well i have IROKS a little different tire and hell of alot different sidewall...:mr-t:
How are they lasting for you? I know Chris's Irok's chunked like crazy after a couple runs.
Hopefully they last longer for you.
Could be all the tire spin on the concrete at RC too. :D
BrassMunkey4 03-06-2009, 02:00 PM could be the 5900 lb weight tag on the rig too!
at least you dont have that problem eric....oh wait
pipehitter155 03-07-2009, 05:53 AM they actually seem to be holding up quite well i'm surprised...not really any chunking issues either....

pipehitter155 03-15-2009, 04:25 PM it's not as bad as it looks...it's actually pretty easy to get in and out..
Grand_ZJ 03-15-2009, 04:49 PM no more doors eh?
I will see it in person sooon enough:flipoff2:
Capt. Nemo 03-15-2009, 05:15 PM how ya gettin in that thing!
It's more like - how's anyone gonna pull him out...:D
Looks good Eric, I like it!
But take my word for it, you will be sore after the first day of contorting your body in and out of it trail riding, it's the price we pay for door-bar protection. But that's just motivation to wheel more often so you stay 'in condition':cool2:
BrassMunkey4 03-15-2009, 07:38 PM Damn how many cages do you need?
I've always wondered about those two windshield bars not being connected, it would really have only been an issue in a bad roll tho.
Looks good man, I cant wait to wheel again.
hadfield4wd 03-16-2009, 11:29 AM I'm just glad you were able to keep the snorkle.:grinpimp:
moab_nate 04-03-2009, 09:19 AM Darn! :( I'd like a set, but hate to put out $380 for something I might just screw up anyhow.
Thanks
They're super easy. I doubt you could mess them up. My 16 year old brother and i did them in 1 day.:smokin:
vetteboy79 04-03-2009, 09:28 AM Damn how many cages do you need?
All the cool kids have 2.
Grand_ZJ 08-14-2009, 02:24 PM updates!
wow I just read every single one of these 27 pages. Sick build bro, keep it up
Xjcrawler736 08-15-2009, 06:14 PM updates!
Getting married and moving into a new house.
Not sure if he has had time to do anything on it.
Lets just hope he still has it for the Unibody run.
pipehitter155 08-16-2009, 11:11 AM cash is really fawking tight with the wedding...bent the shit out of rim during the WEODWF run at crozet rock racing :D:laughing: GrandZJ can attest to me being a dumbass driving...still in the process of getting that fixed..got a weird clunk in the rear output of the transfer case...think it's the driveshaft clearancing on the crossmember after it broke off from a less than stellar weld weld (glad that i found it while switching out driveshafts)...probably going to add a bushing mount on the transfer case and raise it up a bit...
I've got something in the works right now with a buddy for an interesting project....gonna be alot of work and i'm still figuring out the details...
