yeah it's a bastard pack of MJ and rusty's 6.5 inch lift shit...i'm probably gonna pull a overload spring out and see where it sits...i still have alot of trimming to do...i'm probably gonna move the wheel well back about 5 inches and then go from there...we'll see...can't wait to get back from fla and get to work on this damn thing...

I did the same thing with a Rockkrawler 4.5 and S10 pack. Kept the long leaves and ditche dthe overloads. I may be putting one overload back in to handle some weight. I also have Deaver spring liner as well.

been awhile since i did an update here's the rig as it stands as of today:

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1128.jpg

HP60 is torn and awaiting custom front truss from TNT Customs (so boys and girls be on the look out for a D60 truss for those HP from TNT soon), also waiting on inner 'C' gussets from BTF and then it's on...

Decided to shit can the Rusty's long arm and get some a little more beefier. I'm on the fence; either build my own or get a claytons (feel free to chime in)--vetteboy shoot me your measurements:flipoff2: you did build your own didn't you...

The Dana 300 got it's 4 to 1 finally and the box for rocks is slowly going together had a few snags but it still is coming together...

Got about a metric fuckton of ideas in my head about how i wanna do the front....i'm think take the fender and do some tube style sort of exo cage thing and then figure out the rear...who knows:rolleyes:

Hey Eric looking good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I finally got all my upper and lower links built, it is very easy once you get a plan of attack and break out the tape measure. Let me know if you need some help man, I learned tons and tons of stuff by trial and error, sooooooo, any help you need I'd be more than willing than to lend a hand.... Right around 37" for the front lowers. If you're going to be mounting a crossmember anywhere near the stock bolts you'll be hard pressed to get them any longer than that, unless you stretch the front axle out a whole lot.

Here's what i'm doing today on the rig; i've extended the wheel well about 5 inches by cutting it out and moving it back and then adding sheet metal in between it. Welding sheet metal really sucks ass but i think i'm getting the hang of it... as far as the inside goes it will be covered up and then proffessionally rhino-lined really thick to make sure any holes that i missed are filled it really good...as well as the wheel wells....here's some pics of the progress so far:

Oh, I just posted in your other thread. My bad.

I didn't use anything less than 16-gauge anywhere...what you've got there looks like tin foil. :flipoff2:

16-gauge isn't bad to work with, it's a good compromise between being able to form it easily and being able to weld it. On my rear panels for example...

Start here:

Midway done:

If you want a solid long arm kit out of the box, then you cant go wrong with the claytons kit. I have dealed with a lot of their kits at work and I am very impressed with the quality. If you want something custom and have very good fab skills, then build your own. I built my own long arms about 5 or 6 years ago and they are 32" long and mount right under the frame rail just ahead of the crossmember. They have been solid but I drag them all over the place. I am getting ready to build a new XJ since mine is coming appart at the seams (lots of cracks plus it squeeks like a dog chew toy :D ) and I plan on building a new suspension very close to what Vetteboy did and suck the mounts up.

yeah i used 24 guage, i'm thinkin i migjt cut it out tomorrow and use 16 guage honestly....i thought about that today...as far as the long arm goes i settled for the clayton kit yesterday...i wanted my arms to be 40+ inches and it just wasn't gonna happen w/o a shit load of fab work and right now i'm not ready for it honestly....maybe on the next build....

Whats your wheelbase currently sitting at and what are you shooting for? You said you moved the rear axle back ~6 inches so sitting about 108" now? Looks good, I plan on doing the same if not comp cutting in the very near future. :smokin:

pipehitter155
05-09-2007, 05:40 PM
roughly 6 inches.....4 inches w/ the MJ springs and 2 inches w/ the BTF spring perches w/ different holes....

vetteboy79
05-09-2007, 10:58 PM
I'm at about 108.5" last time I measured.

I should (could) have gone another 2" or so further. I don't know why I didn't. I guess because I didn't have a good side view of the truck while I was building it, so I didn't realize I had the extra space. When I do coilovers in the rear I'll probably stretch it a little more.

freerider15
05-10-2007, 12:33 AM
Thing is I want to do a comp cut for several reasons, but dont want the it looking funky with the tire sitting to far forward and having alot of the body stick further back (if you can picture what Im saying). I'de like to move the front forward maybe 2", but may just move the rear a back. Don't want to make it look too uneven...Chris, Nate says he like his 106" WB on Hulk, but I don't think I could pull off 106" with the XJ. Thinking 108" will be about spot on, but still be not too long for CO wheeling. Back on topic:D...I have a link that ya might like to look through. He has some good pics of trying to do exactly what your doing with the rear fender...

I like the bender idea. Smart.

You did a pretty good job on that fender too. Snap a inside pic.

Sweet. Trying to justify putting a 60 up front of mine, but I just don't think I'll have the room. I'm going lower and just trimming more, so I think I'm only going to be able to fit a 44 now. Oh well, thanks.

That's not the lowest you can go with a 60, but I'd say it's nearly the lowest you can go and still retain most of the stock body panels up front. I still run TJ flares right below the crease line on the fenders, just cut to fit the flares, and I haven't messed with the inside fenderwell at all (but the tires do rub the front corner where the battery tray / air filter sit).

It's definitely more than enough height and clearance for the 39.5s though.

well i started doing the 231/300 box 4 rocks today; had to cut some sheet metal to flip the 231 to get it into place also, i'm gonna have to drill the 5,6,7 o clock positions on the tranny to make it mount properly....also does anybody know how do get the double threaded studs into the 231 without using the bolts, i tried that and they grab hold and just turn the studs right back out of the t-case...any suggestions would be appreciated....this should be my project for the next week or two...here's some pics so far...stay tuned fawkers!!!

I assume you mean one of these?

http://www.nickel-systems.com/stud_fasteners_pics/double_end_studs.jpg

Why not use a left-hand nut under a right-hand nut, tighten them both close together, then use an open-end to turn the bottom one. It will want to come loose, but will press against the right hand nut, and won't want to come loose.

(if you understand what I am saying )

guidolyons
05-17-2007, 04:16 PM
Pipehitter, did you try a double nut on the stud? Two nuts tightened against each other effectively make it a "bolt". Install the studs, the loosen/remove the nuts, leaving the stud installed.

Do you have any specifics on your t-case build? I want to swap either a 300 or an atlas into my ZJ and what your doing seems like a cheaper route than an atlas.

Dickwad,

You need to get a set of Transfer Punches to transfer the exact center of the Tcase holes to the Tranny Bellhousing. You can get a set from Harbor Fright for like 30 bucks or less. Hell I found this for 10 bucks...lol

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=3577

I like the armor on the rear. How are you gonna attach it?

Tell Shell I said hello.

i got a set of transfer punches, here's the problem...i need all the same size punch to go in all 6 holes or else i'm not gonna get a true measurement....see what i'm sayin....

as far as the armor goes i was thinkin about welding in and then i was like oh yeah sheet metal again...so i might make a small reinforcement template and get coutersunk bolts and do that...or i might just say fuck it and weld it...or maybe even monster pop rivets...what do yah think???

to i should get the tube door done on the pass side...sucks only having 1.5 set of hands since the right aint worth a shit...

got the TnT frame stiffeners mocked up along w/ the clayton long arm suspension setup...i think it will do well together...

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1232.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1233.jpg

i also got my 12 bolt H1 wheels ready to be mounted, i used USA 6x6 inserts and the skull rings from copperhead fab...turned out pretty nifty...i used a little high solids industrial spray paint on them....

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1231.jpg

i also used the poly insert instead of the chopped up mag inserts

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1234.jpg

here's some pics of the tunnel cover that i fabbed for my flipped 231 for the box for rocks setup....flame away it was my first time fabbing w/ thin gauge metal besides my rear fender...

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1229.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e287/akxj/DSCF1230.jpg

Every time I see that back cut it makes me want to do mine, but then I remember I live in the sierras and that would probably not be good for winter wheeling :)

Honestly, it's a lot more forgiving with weather than I was expecting. I'm almost disappointed with some things...most of it being the lack of wind movement through the cab. Driving around with the doors off and the back chopped at 50 MPH it's very possible to hold a normal conversation and not have your hat blow off. With the doors on and all windows down, I have to use the little vent window to get any kind of airflow into the cab.

That, coupled with the carpet being gone and the exhaust being crammed up against the floor, means it can get very warm very quickly inside there if I'm not moving. Also even when raining it doesn't "suck" any rain into the cab when going down the highway.

I'm probably going to make a soft top for it anyway, but right now it's still very tolerable.

that truss is pretty nice. how much height does it add on top of the tube for the coil? it looks solid. guessing that goes on a ford hp? and keeping it full width?

i like it alot. depending on the price i might use one of those.

With the speed holes allowing watter/mud and stuff in you truss, are you concerend about rust?
In AZ we dont have any experience with rust, it has afew drain holes to clean it out but it looks like a PITA to clean.
I like the rims, is that littel skulls?
I liked the ones on the CRAWL cover afew months ago, had the mudflap girl on them. I should have got something cool cut on mine...

i'm gonna use an high strength industrial paint prior to welding and then paint them the best i can and hope for the best afterward...i think i will be alright...yeah they are little ZERO skateboards skulls (my other hobby is skateboarding)

it's the same price as the D44 TnT customs offers as far as i know and yes it's for a HP 60....if it's adds any hieght it's no more than about an half inch...

here's the pics from APO with it sitting on the bare 60....man i can't wait to get this thing together...

Why is the truss not a closer fit to the center section so you can weld it?

rehab

Why is the truss not a closer fit to the center section so you can weld it?

the truss is not designed to be welded to the center section. it makes it easier to adjust pinion angle when you set it up. the whole point the tnt truss is a tape measureless setup.

plus the center section is cast, and the truss is mild steel and you will not be able to weld to it anyway without the weld cracking (unless you use a nickel rod??, idk)

I believe a 60 center section in nodular which makes it easier to weld with pre and post heating, but I'm not 100% positive. Can't you adjust pinion angle with the adjustable joints?

Can't you adjust pinion angle with the adjustable joints?

Yeah, but why? If you're going through the whole front axle build hassel, why not do it right? And this way you can get upper mounts done and pinion angle correct at the same time. And joints can only correct so much of a pinion angle and then they can only correct for either pinion angle or castor angle and then you'll have to compromise one of them for the other. Do it right, get them both in.

OK I made the assumption arms would be made a the same time. If you have arms already that you are using you will have to build within those perameters.

I personally will be cutting and turning my knuckles. This way pinion angle and caster are not dependent on one another. However I drive it like it is now. Cutting the knuckles will come this winter. Mostly on the trialer to wheeling.

Nice, I'm doing the same, cutting and turning the knuckles, but I'll have to rotate my housing some to accomidate the TNT Y link arms. I think they only have about 2" of adjustment, so I'll put them at 1" and set the pinion.

When adjusted out ~2.5" you'll still have 1" of thread engaugement on 'em.

No the buckets are facing the right way .I think it comes down to who ever welded it up that day was high on fumes or something. The shock mounts should have been welded to the other side, the outside edge of the bucket not the inside edge.

Or they welded the right one on the left and the left one on the right. Either way easy fix.

The shocks will most likely hit the frame with the mounts in that location. I had to move my lower shock mounts outboard from the stock location to keep them from hitting at full articulation.

I had to do the same thing .I moved mine down and away .It still wasn't enough and i would hit the shock on the frame from time to time

Are the coil mounts on backwards? Looks like it's gonna set the axle back further than stock the way you've got 'em there...

For the track bar mount, wait until you've got the steering in place so you can figure out where the axle side needs to go.

Just a sec man, I'll get a pic of the TNT axle side mount. Mines...well, its a bit modified but you'll get the picture.

Ok, the black one is mine, the others are from a guy on Naxja named Cruzin Illusion....I totally jacked his photos off of his site, so even though I'm hosting them, they're not mine. Anyways...this should work well with the 60 truss, but take some measurments for me to be sure and I'll back you up on them.

Mine first,

that tnt one would probably work....does that come with the kit....that didn't come with my truss...

53guy
12-18-2007, 08:46 PM
No, it doesn't come with the kit, it's like $75 bucks or some crap like that. Way over priced for the material and welds, but its easy.

12-19-2007, 06:56 AM
ohhhh.....gotcha...well, maybe i will just order that despite the fact that its over priced and crap....i will take a measurement today while i'm over there....i'm workin on the frame reinforcement plates for the front right now...

hadfield4wd
12-19-2007, 07:47 AM
I have the TNT one. It is offset to the front about an 1" over stock. Actually makes it easier to get to the bolts to tighten them. Yes it's over priced, but my labor in making the thing would be more time than is worth it.

got a little work done the hand started throbbin....worked on the pass. side front fender frame stiffener 1/8 plate, hole saw, cut to fit and dimple died bitches!!! the crash course in torch handling was fun too...hahaha...still got grind it clean up the edges a bit with a grinder and weld it in place...

Those should help on keeping the front end stiff. You might even be able to tie that into your front bumper?

That would help with the unibody issues majorly....

Doesn't look over priced to me. Not when you consider how much time it would take to make that thing from scratch. Piddling around in the garage you'd have most of a day duplicating that, including the time to figure out the design.

However, the mounting width of johnny joints is 2 5/8", and you can get misalignment spacers for 3/4" rod ends that are 2 5/8" wide. 3x3x3/16 square tubing is 2 5/8" ID, and it's pretty easy to make mounts out of that stuff. Nearly every mount on my rigs, that I've made, is made from that 3" square tubing.

Yeah, that's definitely a nice piece, can't argue that.

I still say you should wait until the steering is in before you address the axle track bar mount. Unless you're doing full hydro (might have missed this).

And like Goatman, I've got no less than 8 link mounts on my frame/axles that are made from 3x3x3/16" square. Makes for some easy layout, especially for triangulated links.

why did you dimple die it?

adds more strength with less weight of steel (if that makes sense)

vetteboy is right....the trac bar will wait until the axle is under the rig and steering is mocked up so i can get a rough idea of what i need....

pipehitter155
12-22-2007, 03:18 PM
got the pass side stiffener all welded up (that dimple dieing really works)...got the driver side cut from 1/8inch plate; i'm not going to do anything til i get the trac bar mount and stuff from TNT (that requires $$$; which i ain't got)....my buddies and i then focused our attention to the tcase doubler setup and tried getting that POS D300 clocked correctly....still gonna need a few test fits tomorrow and it should be good...probably gonna have to run cables...

pipehitter155
12-23-2007, 03:01 PM
well we got the double tcase setup clocked where i wanted it and it looks like i'm gonna run into to some driveline issues with the clayton crossmember....basically at full flex, the driveshaft is gonna hit the crossmember....i'm gonna call up Jesse at high angle and see what he can do about making a two piece driveshaft...not real hip on the idea of it but it looks like it's my only option besides a 3 speed STAK box!!! more to come...have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Are you running a flipped D300 with a box 4 rocks kit? Curious because i also have the clayton crossmember and I'm going to be running the dual case setup.

I'm running the same setup as you (with a NV3550) and I just tucked my whole drivetrain up higher. This took care of the driveline clearance issue and gave me a flat belly to boot.

It requires quite a bit of floor cutting though...

12-23-2007, 08:14 PM
i've got an AW4, not real sure what the difference length wise between the two is...Timmay, i'm thinking that i may just have to cut some of the floor out...you got any pics of your setup your running as far as how much of the floor you had to cut out...

wheeler21 yes i have the box4rocks kit and flipped D300 w/o a flip kit...i'm thinkin there's gonna be some floor removal sessions in the near future...

i guess you didn't see where said Parker Metal plasma cutters suck!!! i had a problem with it not turning on when i flipped the switch...don't know why...i still gotta call the guys @ parker metal...figure when spend as much money as i did and got the goat rope that i did; i should get a plasma cutter that works...eventually when i move to the country i'm gonna buy a small 4'x4' (maybe bigger) plasma cam for my buggy build thats when i will get a nice plasma cutter til then i'm using my trusty torch!!!
