I met 2 El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies at the Gatekeeper Monday morning. Both really nice and mellow. They told me that the county was given some grant money to fund the operation. They will have deputies on the trail every weekend throughout the summer. They told me they are looking out for drunk driving, firearm and fireworks violations and general unsafe behaivior.

I, for one, am glad to see them up there :)

Only people I talked to that didn't like them there were the people that shouldn't be on the trail in the first place. By the way how do you get a job like that? You get to be on the con all weekend, carry a gun, drive quads, tell people what to do, watch idiots, and get paid...

Will patrol cover the entire trail, or just from the box out? I too will be glad to see the man out on the Con.

I too am in favor of this, it will help keep the yahoo's in line.

Where i was camped (not on the con) someone rolled into my camp with 2 hand guns of some sort they were wearing under there fannel shirt.
The guy just made me nervous being in my camp

This is also considered a "last ditch effort" to keep the trail open, so hopefully this will work out, I for one welcome them. I just hope all those clowns out there don't ruin it for us, cause there are alot of clowns on the trails these days!

The fact that they were around sure seemed to keep things less out of control.

They did ask us for our help. If you witness anything illegal or someone damaging the trail, get their license number and description and notify El Dorado County Sheriff's dept. They have a list of known "offenders" they're keeping their eyes open for.

They say that they are on our side and want to help to keep the trail open. I'm affraid dog walker (Jeff) is right- this may be our last chance to keep this wonderful trail open :(

last year when we did carnage on the con and the helicopter full of cops landed and they started asking for 'camo" made me a little nervous. then i met with them and learned they were there for us and not against us. i was pleased. sad to say it has gotten to that point.

I talked to them for about 20 minutes on Saturday at the Sluice. They were extremely nice. I wanted to inquire about the open container issue :D
He said as long as you are not waiving it infront of their face and being stupid they wont say a thing. They want everyone to have a good time. They are up there for the select few that do extremely stupid things.

I too am glad they are there.

awesome!!! this is great news. you know what would be cool too, is if after hanging around up by the box for long enough, they bought their own rigs and got into the sport.

hope that none of the yahoos complain about it, cause if they do they deserve a major ass whoopin' :D

They told me the same thing :) They're not gonna stop you if you have a beer in your lap while driving unless you are acting like you're drunk and stupid!

I can live with that :D

I asked the officer that I was talking to how he got this detail. He said that it was because he had been coming up here for years and knew the area well.

He knew several people by name and was asking where Roggy was. He seemed very knowledgable about 4wds.

Well, I for one think it FAWKIN SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but if it what is necessary to keep the trail open then you gotta do what you gotta do.

Hopefully El Dorado Cty sherrif's don't have the power trip mentality you run into with a lot of cops. Luckily the cooler the detail, the less likely that the cop will be a prick, and it sounds like these guys were cool.

Too bad we can't just go out in the woods without having idiots on our asses and cops there to control them.

that's what I thought too until I met them. all the cops up there have been cool guys not interested in doing anything but stopping idiots which I think is a cool thing...I love to wheel piss drunk but my piss drunk is half the time undetectable as far as my actions and speech so i'm not in their radar. it's those who are just out of control doing things that could hurt people in places that are not right for the action. like ramming a crowd of people watching people wheel in the right place....ya know. basically they were needed to keep control. it'll keep more people off the bypasses (keeping the trail open) it'll minimize the use of dynamite and guns. they are just a nice presence....and shit I totally didn't like the idea last year but now it makes sense.

It's cool that they are cool, but it's lame that we need cops to patroll ourselves. Hopefully they will remain cool and not try to change things too much but only time will tell.

Write to them and tell them how you feel. I did last year after they were there in July. Tell them exactly what you are saying here that you appreciate their presense without harrasment which is what their job is and they seem to be doing. Here is the address. They like to be thanked for doing their job just as much as anyone.

Seeing as they seem to have our general support on this issue, I went ahead and sent them the link to this page. I hope they will see that the REAL wheelers appreciate what they are doing up there;)

Yesssss I'm all for it. I not one that likes Big brother but some of these Yahoo's are worse than kids, they have no self control and are going to ruin it for everybody. Are the Sherifs going to moniter any certain channel on the CB so if we have a problem we can reach them will on the trail? maybe CH 9

If you all would have been at the meeting yesterday, you could have told the Sheriff-elect in person. :p

I dislike people in general. So many of them are such dumb asses that good things like the Con get ruined and we need babysitters to keep us from killing each other. How sad. The world is being taken over by people who never bothered to grow up.

I'm as big a fan of stumbeling drunkeness as the next guy, but I'd never wheel that way. Save the beers for when you're in camp or just watching the action.

Jackass's and Cops, I hate them both! But anything to keep the trail open.

Glad to hear you can still have a beverage and wheel, that is very cool.

Speaking of jackasses. Whoever drove the red Sami that lost his clutch then proceded to break his back window after chugging a bottle booze and cussed up a storm, he was a JACKASS!

LEO's on the trail are a good thing.

It takes just a few idiots to ruin things for the rest of us out there. If it was left alone, the "free for all" mentality would grow and attrack even more idiots. That is exactly what happened at Glamis until it got totally out of control last Thanksgiving. BLM then went 180 degrees and instituted a zero-tolerance ploicy. A little control earlier in the process would have sent a message to the losers that have no clue, and the extreme solution never would have happened.

Peer pressure is a good tool, but it is sometimes nice to have a little backup...
