I have an old scuba tank in my garage. Can it be used for C02? If so, how easily?
Will this regulator fit it?

i dont think it is going to work. the valve on a scuba tank is unique and not like valves on other gas cylinders. you would have to use the hp port on a scuba first stage, and i can promise that will cost more than a co2 bottle

Looks like I need to find a fire extinguisher then.

Scuba tanks use a tapered thread. Won't work since welding regulators use straight thead.

The scuba tanks I'm familiar with use a C-clamp type of connection kinda like the clamps for a V-block. SCBA tanks use a parallel thread.

You can get scuba to gas (lack of a better term) adapters. If I was at home, I could dig up a p/n and location to get it, but considering I am 2700kms from home at the moment, it ain't gonna happen :flipoff2:

if anyone knows how to make this work or where to get the adapters, it'd be great to know. I'm in the same situation, have a scuba tank sitting in the garage so I can use it for CO2 if possible

If you want, you can use the Scuba tank for..... get this..... AIR!!
Go to a dive shop (or better yet a marine surplus/dive shop) and ask for an old, non certifiable regulator (i.e. one that can't be certified for use for SCUBA any more). Then run a line off the low-pressure port and have a standard 1/4NPT or 3/8NPT end crimped on it (or buy the hose already made like that).
Done, now you have a AIR source regulated to like 50-90 PSI, I can't remeber its been too long.
Down side, you have a 2100 or 3000psi 'bomb' (not really, but if the valve breaks they have quite a bit of force) bouncing around in the back of a trail rig. SCUBA tanks are like all pressure tanks, you need to handle them safe, secure and with respect. Plus SCUBA tanks need to be tested every couple of years and certified, otherwise a legitimate dive shop WILL NOT fill them, and they do go 'boom' every once in a while.
IMO, CO2 is safer... and should be stored in... get this.... A CO2 TANK! You get new 10lbs tanks for around $100 on e-bay, cheaper if you keep an eye out on local classifieds, or they are pretty cheap to 'rent' at the local gas supplier typically 5# or 20#, but your shop may vary on what they 'stock'). Especially since they are going to be the ones to fill them up for you in the first place. Is any CO2 outfit going to fill you SCUBA tank?
So, $0-$100 for a tank, $0-$50 for a bracket, $0-$50 for a regulator (whether you go with a used 'gauge' reg or one of the preset ones from places like 'the source', or 'Williams Balloon Co."), then what ever you want for hose. With a free tank I think I built my last one for under $100.
*I* feel CO2 is safer. Its at a lower pressure than anything else, and available at most welding shops, especially in the 'exchange-a-tank' method.

I'm using a scuba tank for my CO2.
The guy I buy my welding supplies from at the welding shop got me the valve and installed it for me. My Company Fire Extinguisher Guy fills it for me for about $10.
