: Cut-out flares PITA?
MudShack 05-28-2002, 12:31 PM I am looking to cut about 2" off of my fenders for clearance and to cut the rust off of the truck. I hate the thought of forking out the $$$$ for cut-out flares that will get beat to hell on the trails, but all the other cheap rubber ones need the stock lip to mount.
How many of you have installed the Cut-out flares, and how much of a PITA is the rear. CAZ told me that it is a couple of days worth of work.
Looking for opinions.
TNToy 05-28-2002, 02:03 PM For the taco or the runnah in your sig?
Only seen 1 86-89 toy w/ those. It was ugly. Really ugly.
I'm planning on using Dzus fastners on mine, so I can remove them when wheeling.
Will post pics once that is done...

for the 86 4Runner. I sold the Taco, but the webmaster won't let me change my sig. My email addy had been blocked, and no one will return my emails. So, I have had this outdated sig for almost 4 months now.

Hey man. Remember meeting me up at paragon in the beginning of April? You were looking around my black 4runner at the gas station in the morning.
Yes, get some pics. The pics that CAZ gave me involved, fiberglass, welding, etc. YUK. I just want to cut 2" off of the fenders to get rid of the rust and flares to cover my inspection.
Thanks
Yeah, after talking with you, I realized who you were! :)
Sorry we didn't get to wheel together, will have to do it next time. We'll be there for the CMCC, July 12-14th. All Toyotas! :)
Should be there in the Grey 87 Runner. Will take lots of pics of the fender mods and the fastner ideas, if I get it done by then...

That's because he blocked all the hotmail-style ones, since people who were being little punks on the BB would use those things... so he blocked them all. You can get your own pirate4x4 email (see home page) or use your REAL email address in your profile. It *will* let you change it off of a hotmail-type account, and you'll be able to get to your profile again.
4RnrRick 05-28-2002, 06:17 PM I've got a NEW set of rear 84 to 89 4Runners bushwackers for sale. See http://www.cascadecrawlers.com/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=4x44sale;action=display;num=1014164 340

Thanks for that heads up.

Are they the extend-a-flares or the cut out flares? If they are the cut out flares, I am interested. Do you have the drill bit, and install template/instructions?
4RnrRick 05-28-2002, 10:07 PM I ordered the Cut-Out kind and from my understanding they sent me the extend-a-flare kind. 4WP said I couldn't return so I'm stuck with them. I do have the instructions.
mwoodruff 05-28-2002, 10:10 PM It is a bit of work. I've done this on two rigs with the extend-a-fender's. Most of the work comes from the rust removal, patching, etc. Problem is the mounting points are gone once you cut the rust out. I had to use some *long* sheet metal screw to reach up for attachment points. Definitely looks better when done. They are fairly strong. A scam at over $200. I bought mine from JC Whitney with a 15% off coupon. Best $$ I could find.
ausyota 05-29-2002, 04:35 PM does anyone know if you can get a flare that is a true cut out for the front of a 89-95 truck?
The bushwacker cut-outs dont actually cut any out on the front.
I just wanna hack some off!!! :)
Paul.

Here here!!
I run the Bushwacker 3" cutouts on my '84. Really easy to install but the wll break and rip off very easily if caught on a tree or such.

Yeh brother that is what I am worried about with running at Paragon's tight trails.
Hate to spend that kind of money on something that will break. But all the cheaper flares (JCWhitney) need to have the stock fender lip to mount to. (so says the pics online). I would really like a nice set of rubber ones that give, but will also allow me to pass inspection. Ya know?
Oh, did I mention that I want to cut off 1.5"-2" from each fender to get rid of the PA Cancer. And to help clear 35's or 37's next year.
