: oil spill clean up options.
66CJdean 05-28-2002, 01:17 PM I had the remote oil filter line bust on my rig this weekend so @80psi it emptied 5 quarts of oil very quickly. I don't carry anything with me that could clean up 5 quarts of oil on the trail and am looking for options in case something like this ever happens again. Someone was telling me about an enzyme that eats the oil that they use on ocean spills and I know kitty litter is popular. Any one have info or ideas:confused:
Scout Dude 05-28-2002, 01:18 PM Pig Mat is what we used in the military..I think you can get it publically. Search the net for it.
Rudezuk 05-28-2002, 01:20 PM Take a shovel, throw some dirt on it to soak it up then bag up the dirt and haul it out with you...

There are enzymes and protiens that help neutralize oils and could be used if all else fails. Search the Internet for oil spill products but you'll find mostly products for large spills, well over your little 5 quarts. Diatamatious (sp) earth (kitty litter) will only absorb the spill and you'll need to then gather up the polluted kitty litter then properly dispose of it.
Question: How do you properly dispose of oiled kitty litter? Do they take it at recycle points or simply add to the dumpster?
In the oilfield, large oil absorbant mats are used, commonly referred to as diapers, usually are about 36"x36" and roll up like thick cloth. They will asorb oil and not water. I'll get a brand name, next time I see it.

The fact that human hair soaks up oil well does not surprise me as much as the fact that you know it does!:D
I like the sand/ dirt from the trail and the garbage bag. Lets not get to technical here:D

Very true, and hair salons will often give it away.

It is the shit and is great to have around for minor and major oil spills, that you would encounter with your ride. Make sure you carry some thick garbage/leaf type bags to put this in, and dispose of it properly. HTH Andy

These are what I have in mind and especialy the Brocksupply one. Thanks
I was talking with some of the guys in the club and we want to make up some kits that everyone in the club packs along or at least the ones that wheel. This way we are prepaired for are messes or someones elses since oil on the trail is not new but is a big deal. So what I want and would bet everyone else would want is a product that neutralizes the oil so that what is left behind is taken care of. Keep the ideas comming because I would like to find the best product and then spread the word on the Con and Fordyce because this is something we all need to have in are rigs.
66CJdean 05-29-2002, 02:13 PM Well what I found and ordered was called Oil Gator. It comes in a 30lb bag for $25 from www.absorbentsonline.com and sounds like the sh!t. It is natural, and eats what oil you can't get out of the rocks. Also it burns. Hope to see others pick up a bag.
Big Rich 05-29-2002, 04:07 PM I'll be picking up more than a few. Between that and the pads, we'll be able to keep the comp areas clean.
