Hey guys, I have a quick question about flat towing my YJ.
I have always heard to take the front driveshaft off and
just slap the X-fer case in neutral. Now someone just told
me that the fluid in the case won't circulate and will overheat
if I were to do that, because the front DS needs to be spinning
to throw the oil around because the rear DS is "disengaged".
Sounds wrong to me but would like to know for sure?? Tried to
do a search but kept getting an error.
Thanks for the help

"someone" is wrong. ;) The YJ's have a vac disco, so when it's disengaged and the t-case is in 2wd, the front DS is not spinning anyways. Best bet for long distances is to yank both DS, and make sure to plug the t-case to keep the fluid from leaking out. I just slap the t-case into N, put the tranny in gear (manual) when I flat tow. But that is an XJ with the 207 case.

that was my point exactly :D
In 2wd your front DS won't spin anyway....well my does because
of the locker, but not everyone has that.
I'll probably end up pulling both for the hell of it, only takes a cpl
of minutes

I flat tow my YJ with no problems. The NP231 T Case has the oil pump running from the rear ds. So as long as the shaft is spinning, oil is pumping. After attaching to the tow vehicle, turn off the engine and put the T Case in neutral, and the Trans in first. Towed 110+ miles at a time with no problem.

The 231 has an oil pump that moves oil anytime the main shaft turns. Either in 2wd or 4wd.
I flat tow mine with the rear drive shaft pulled, and the hubs unlocked in front (d60).
If you haven't flat towed much, be careful. The Jeep will push thru corners and flat towing doesn't add any tongue wieght to increase braking capability. There are several braking systems you can buy that will use the Jeeps brake system to slow the Jeep instead of relying on the tow vehicle. They aren't cheap but if you've flat towed in wet weather you will know they are worth getting.

Thx for the info ukjeeper, that is about what I have done in the past, BUT I put the tranny in neutral as well...why would you put
the tranny in 1st?? Wouldn't that be the same as neutral since
your X-fer case is in neutral and none of your driveshafts would
be "turning" the tranny

i've got a 92 that when i flat tow i keep the t-case in 2 hi and the tranny in neutral. i tow it 150+ miles at a time.

ok I'm hearing alot of info similar to what I'm picturing but
because I don't know the specifics of your rigs and if your
methods would work for me let me tell u some of my set up and
how I was thinking of towing
Here's my specs:
I-6, ax-15 5spd, detroit (8.8") rear, Dana 30 with lockright up
front.
Now I usually leave the front DS off until I wheel because it
goes through u-joints pretty quick. So if I tow with no front
DS, put the tranny and x-fer case in neutral...think that would
cause any problems??
