More specifically i'm lookin for close up pics of how people have attached the vertical supports to the nerf bars and how the nerfs were constructed. I'm gonna be building some nerfs soon and am planning on an exo in the next year or so and wanna design the nerfs with that in mind. Also what is everyones take on the best way to attach the nerfs to the frame. I'm planning on welding em but want some ideas on different types of supports, what size, shape, how many? Thanks.

As for closeups of the nerfs and how the nerfs were built... mine are double tube, 1.5 0.120 DOM, standard production items, with the cage simply dropped on top. Four legs to the frame, each side, with frame plates and gussets, all welded up.

scott did you use 1.5 for your cage as well? I'm tryin to decide what i wanna use and i dont want it to look to bulky, but i want the strength. I know yours held up to a hard roll so if its 1.5 then i'm all over it. thanks.

Mine is 1.5 0.120 DOM throughout. It did hold up to a hard roll (and two soft ones so far) but it does have some damage from the hard roll. A couple bent tubes and the like... I should cut them out and replace them, but they're extremely difficult to remove.

The white 4Runner is formerly Chris Geiger's rig... it's been... umm... altered... from what Chris last saw. :)

Dallas, Corbin has got a bunch of pics up now on www.trailseeker.com, Scott did a nice job with the cage, but the nerfs seem to be the key. Like the gussetting.

Thats a pretty cool looking bed, did you just throw some expanded steel over the area between the frame rails? I like it.

I believe that is the guy that had a step by step thread going with that bed install, good thread. If that is the one I am thinking of, it is the all-pro flatbed kit. Search for the thread using "all-pro" and "flatbed" and I'm sure it will pop up...

We made it removable for ease of re-painting and access to the fuel tank and other parts of the rig.

The only thing I would worry about w/this design is the area above the door, the top of the door frame. I've run mine up against rocks and trees w/out damaging the sheet metal in this area. I would make it at least even w/the outer edge of the top at the door frame. Just imagine leaning over into a tree or a rock slab.

Heheheh... yeah, something like that. :)

Actually, I need to scrap the Boggers and buy some TSL's for the back--Boggers were the worst mistake I've made with that truck, and I only have two of 'em. :(

If I stuffed 6x6 into that short (120") a wheelbase, I'd likely have to skidsteer it, but don't think I haven't kicked around some pretty wild stuff to do with the next project truck.

And Daniel... I started building a 6x6 a while back, but ended up that it just wasn't going to work the way I wanted it to, not without Rockwells (which I couldn't afford). Now that Rockwells are a little more realistic option, you never know....

But I gotta do something with the eight or ten axles that I've got sitting next to the garage now, before the wife'll let me bring home more. How many places can I articulate a frame, and how many steer axles can I use on one truck? I think I'm gonna build a millipede.... :)

Good point there, usually i run door less so it wont be as much of a problem, but i do plan to bring it out a little. I'll have to change it a bit at the A pillar too, cause the isuzu doors wrap around the pillar in front and at the top so i'll need a little more clearance to open without interference. thanks for the pics everyone, you really got my wierd mad max side runnin overtime with ideas.

Mine, yes it is a Toyota thing.

My advice to you is to make the nerfs as small as possible and tuck them in as far as possible. I had 2x6 ones that mounted under the body seam and I got hung up on them all the time. Once you're on them, they don't really want to slide unless the truck is level. If the truck is leaning it's weight on them, it takes much more effort to get the weight of the truck off them. I cut mine off and notched the rocker panels up as high as I could go without interfering with door operation. I gained 2.5" clearance and it helps a lot. I also went down to 2x4 material that is tucked in as far as possible to allow the exo mounts to still have something to sit on all the way around.

pmurf do you have any closeup pics of your rockers? did you actually cut the rockers off or just the little flat piece at the bottom. One of my rockers is thrashed so cutting them off all except the sill under the door would be pretty sweet, i'm just not sure of the strength of the sill after the rocker is hacked off.

I would leave the rockers for now and just notch it to get the bars up as high as possible and as far in as possible. Here's a pic of mine.
