Hey guys, I'm in the market for a Ford diesel and I found a '99 F350 that is in awesome shape. I was wondering what the gas mileage would be?. I guessed from 15-18. Also is there an aftermaket chip or programmer that could help boost the mileage to the mild 20s?. Thanks for the input.

If you want to touch the 20s, the one thing that might help is to switch to a different ring & pinion. This would be aided by a larger exhaust, injectors, mild tuner, and less restrictive intake. Also, don't mash the skinny pedal and keep the RPMs in the 1700 range.

The one thing you need to consider is how long will it take to recoup the costs of these upgrades. I was all about upgrading my truck as mentioned until I did the math step. Now I just focus on solid maintenance....at least until I win the lottery.

2wd or 4wd? single, extra or crew cab? These things make a difference in weight, which impact MPG. Regular service and clean filters help. You will get better MPG if you keep the tank more than half full (less than that and it gets full of air/foam). Keep the speed/RPMs down amd drive like an old woman if you want good MPG. My 2002 Crewcab 4wd with leveling kit got just under 20mpg stock on the way from PHX to SAN DIEGO at 68mph.

I just like the feel of the turbo spooling up too much to keep out of the pedal so I get about 13mpg around town. Still better than my 2004 Expy 5.4 4wd (11mpg)

I have a 2003 with the 7.3 and get around 13.5 around town and 17 empty on the highway if I stay out of it and keep the rpm under 2000. The truck has 6.5" of lift, 37" tires, 4.30 R&P, 80 HP chip, AFE stage2 intake, Banks Monster Exhaust. If Im towing my toyhauler fully loaded (about 12K) I get anywhere from 9-12 depending on the terrain.
