: Help me identify this D44
WillisXJ 05-28-2002, 06:05 PM Sorry, no pics, but here's what I have:
Its a SR D44, Pass drop, leaf sprung, axle disconnect on the left axle tube, vacuum actuator mounts on top of the axle for the disco, flat top knuckles (drivers side has the 1/2 moon linkage), discs, 5x5.5 bolt pattern, Mile Marker manual hubs, and the calipers bolt to a bracket that bolts to the knuckles. It does not use a backing plate/caliper bracket like the Chebys.
Spent $100 on this axle (whole thing), took everything from the knuckle out, and bolted it on my drum brake 75' RC D44 Ford axle. The other housing got scrapped. It worked great, and I didn't have to piece together a Cheby/Ford combination to get flat tops and 5x5.5 bolt pattern. I just want to know what I came from, because I need to know some info for stuff like bearings, calipers, etc....I posted it here, cause I have a feeling it's Jeep, maybe J10?? Oh ya, gears in it were like 3.32, with open diff, if that helps. Soon (prolly next year) it will be narrowed and hanging under my XJ!!
Thanks,
Willis
The Rockslut 05-29-2002, 07:21 AM Sounds like a late model Waggy front 44 with either scout II outers or CJ outers. Does it have external bolt on hubs? What was the spline count on the stub shaft?

Yep. The housing is from a late model waggy with that vacuum crap. but the outers are definitely from something else as the waggy had 6 lug.
pad :D
WillisXJ 05-29-2002, 07:38 AM By the way everything bolted together, I don't think it was a swap done to convert to 5x5.5 pattern. It was suggested to me that it may be from an 80s Dodge. I'll check the spline count of the stub axles, and it used the Mile Marker hubs that internally, look like my Warn premiums that came off my 75 RR Ford D44. I'll compare them closer and post it tonight.

You could be right. Every Waggy with a disconnect I've seen has been driver side drop. Now I'm
The Rockslut 05-29-2002, 07:57 AM DOH! I forgot about the passenger side drop part. Is it factory sprung over? How wide is it? WMS-WMS
Aggro 05-29-2002, 08:05 AM dodge
Trango 05-29-2002, 08:59 AM Find the Bill of Materials on the casting - then go to

Good luck

WillisXJ 05-29-2002, 12:29 PM Axle is gone, so no BOM. And, it looked full sized, not a waggy 60", but I didn't measure. I forgot to mention, it was spring over axle, and the tie rod mounted on top of the knuckle arms, also, there was no track bar mount. We have All-Data at work, so I looked up a 83ish Dodge, and looked at pics of the calipers. Looks like the same mounting style, and caliper. These calipers don't bolt on through the back like a Chevy one does, there is a slider thing (goes between caliper and caliper bracket) and bolt that go on top and bottom of the calipers into the slider, and like I said, the calpers hook to the caliper bracket (big cast piece) that bolts to the back side of the knuckle. Same as pic I saw in All-Data. So looks like it's Dodge.
Thanks,
Willis
hy_desert_4wheeler 05-29-2002, 04:43 PM My bet is it is an 85 to 93 Dodge.. I believe the 84 and older still had hubs

JEEPRZ 05-29-2002, 08:02 PM Definatly a dodge, most likely a ramcharger
Another vote for Dodge. The Waggie vacuum disconnect isn't on the axle tube, it's in the centersection with a big modulator attached in front of the diff cover. Also the passenger side drop Waggies were never vacuum disco. None of them were spring over.
WillisXJ 05-29-2002, 08:51 PM It is definitely Dodge, 83ish 1/2 ton. Found some pics of some, and they are identical. Mystery solved!
As most know, there are a few options to switch from drums to discs on a Ford D44, but I wanted flat top knuckles, so I can run hi-steer. My options there were Chevy, Jeep Wagoneer, and apparently, Dodge, which I didn't know about till just today. With both Chevy and Waggy knuckles, you run the knuckle, spindle, backing plate/caliper mount, and caliper. You then run 86ish F150/Bronco hubs and rotors to get a 5x5.5 bolt pattern instead of the Chevy/Waggy 6x5.5 pattern, and the bearing come from 78ish F150/Bronco, it's a nice mix of parts.
This Dodge swap is perfect. For $100, I got the whole (Dodge) axle, then swapped the knuckles, spindles, hubs, rotors, and everything on my Ford axle. Now I have flat top knuckles, and disc brakes, without mixing and matching parts and having to remember what part comes from what vehicle. IMHO, it's the best Hi-steer/Disc/5x5.5 conversion that can be done. It really worked to my advantage!! Maybe something to remember for some of you looking for a conversion like this for Jeep, EB, or whatever.
Thanks all for the help!
Willis
