Ok i'm in a jam, I got a 83 cj7 with a 460 in it, i bought it like that. Its a rebuilt engine, the oil pan is a rear sump. the old dipstick location is from the side but its no good to me because the frame is blocking use of it, so there fore that hole is plugged. The original dipstick location through the front cover has a some old dipstick cut in half that appears to just be there for looks. I got a dipstick from another 460 but it does me no good because its for a front sump. What i need to know is how would i check the oil or atleast, figure out what to do about it. I'm kinda stuck and have no idea what to do now. does any one have this engine setup that could measure their dipstick and i cut get one and cut it to length.thanks

What vehicle is the engine in? Is your tolerance between your motor and frame so close that you can't put a small bend in the dipstick tube to make it work?
The only other thing that might work is finding a oil pan and dipstick from a 460 powered van. I don't know if that is a rear sump application that you could use though.
Edit: Never mind, 83 CJ7, got it.

Sounds like time for a clear sight tube! :flipoff2:
You're gonna have to find a way to use that rear/side dipstick. Modify the mount or clearance the frame rail (& box it). Move the engine. Put on a clear oil pan. Duck tape a midget under your rig with his ear on the oilpan so he can yell when the sloshing is too low.
You can put a dipstick wherever you want. Particularly easy if you only go thru the pan itself. But it has to read off the sump end.
