so i broke the aod trans i was going to use on my jeep swap.. i cracked the bellhousing(its all one piece) ..so bad its useless other than for parts..

my question is what manual trannies will work.. i'd actually rather go for a manual due to the length of auto trannies and the short wheelbase on the jeep

ive looked all over for a t-18 or t-19 but have had no luck and need to get this done soon.. what is another option..something strong.. im running 38s

NP435 for a 4spd

or

Smallblock ZF for a 5spd

I think the ZF (5 speed) was use in later trucks as well.

np 435's are awesome. i have a few 2wd's laying around but you would have to get the output recut.

60s through early 80s trucks. You also would need the smallblock bellhousing if'n it didnt come from a I6/302/351w.

The ZF you require would come from a '88-'97 F-2/350 with the 351w only. The 460 and diesels have a different non changeable bell pattern.

It's a heavy duty five speed granny low and overdrive unit highly desired in 4x4 models.

Most mock the Mazda 5 Speed its not bad but the ZF has a well earned reputation I have used the Mazda's and dont mind em myself.

I had the mazda in my BII(not the R1, but the R2) behind a 302, it was a decent tranny, but I hated the tall ratios.

If your swapping in a 4 speed, look for a mid 80's to mid 90's truck, so you can ensure you get one with a hydro clutch setup. NP 435 or T-18 doesn't really matter, both are good trannys. personaly I think the t-18 shifts better, but that might be just me. I had a t-18 in my wheeler, and now run a 435. No issues with either, other than the syncros, 3rd goes out on the T-18, and 2nd on the 435.

ZF's are nice, but they are a fairly long tranny depending on what you are swapping it into, they also bring a premium price. I had one in my F-250 behind a 300/6, and one in my current diesel. They shift ohhh so nice.. and the syncro first gear kicks ass.

How hard do you plan on beating this thing? If you beat it and want a 5 speed you need a ZF. Plan on having a hard time finding one and paying big bucks. It's rather large too. The M5OD-R2 would be ok behind a moderate 302 in a Jeep. The T18/19 and NP435 are all good transmissions. I liked the T19 because of the syncronized 1st, something the T18 didn't have. All three are a good choice really. The ZF is fully sycronized and really is a good transmission; I have one in my 396W Ranger. The price, availibility, and physical size tend to be a bit of a drag though.

..i like to say im an ultimate test drive.. just want to build something that will hold up to a bit of abuse...i jumped the stock rig a few times... axles didnt last long haha...i have 60's under it now.. and just talked to a guy in oregon about a np435 that is in perfect condition been used about 3 months now since it was rebuilt.. he is parting the bronc out and sell the trans with tcase adapter for 100$.. im going through paypal and gonna have him ship it on a crate...

now im wondering whether my t-case (whatever came on my aod off a later bronco) will fit this new trans or whether i have to fork out a few more bucks on a new one, the guy did say he had a 205 married to it... i have so much shit lying around to sell off... trial and error is a bitch...

also what other t-cases may fit in place of a 205.. for future reference and all....dunno what im gonna be using for the t-case
and are the splines on the np435s pretty much all the same.. did they differ on different ford trucks/broncos

All of the fullsize round 6 pattern Ford t-cases will fit, 4x4 Fords have a 31 spline output. You probably have a BW1356, but depending on how new the Bronco is you may have a NP208. The NP205 is about the strongest you are going to get in factory trim and it happens to be physically smalller than the 208 and the BW1356.

NP435 or T18 if you want the creeper gear. (wide ratios)
ZF if you want the creeper gear and OD. (wide ratios)
T19A if you want 4 'driving' gears. (close ratios)

as stupid as this sounds how can i tell what tcase i have.. it has an aluminum case... no numbers on it whatsoever.. and what would a cracked bellhousing aod be good for?... anyone have any experience with a welded cast aluminum housing?

Try this http://www.venturesparts.com/ford_transfer_cases.htm

If its aluminum you're only bets are NP 208, BW1345, or BW1356.
A cracked AOD is as good as a big pape weight.
