Boat siding is the next step of my build so I'm looking for some suggestions on where to cut. Last time I welded 2x3 to the area where my rockers were but I bashed my doors in to the point where my glass shattered. :mad3: So I have three ideas in mind right now.
1: Cut the cab up to the lower door hinge and mount some 2x4 behind the hinge so I can weld it back on and keep some of my doors.
2: Cut the cab below the door hinge and leave some over-hang to the 2x4 when I weld it on. This will help protect the door when I'm using my rockers to pivot around obstacles.
3: Cut the lower hinge off, mount the 2x4 flush, remove the fenders, tube the front end and complete the buggy phase of my build. Of course I'll have to buy a trailer for this and a tow rig because I need to drive this to and from the trails still.
I'm open to suggestions and better ideas. I've only been thinking about this for a few weeks.

Cut off above the hinge, plate the bottom and have custom soft doors made. You can keep the front fenders. Click on the link to my play toy.

Badass rig. I was thinking of making my own doors or running no doors at all. The problem is that my state is very strict on what you can and can't do to your vehicle and I've already done a lot of the "don'ts". Plus we have snow here.

I basically did option 2 on mine (but used 3x3 tube). Basically the outer edge of the tube is about even with the outermost part of the door, so it protects them some but completely. I plan on adding some sort of rock sliders onto the tube that sticks out the same amount as the tires.
If you just go up to the bottom hinge, you can cut the doors and still leave enough room for the regulator and other window hardware. While I run with the doors off during the summer, we also run all through the winter and it's really nice to have doors and windows when it's below zero and snowing out.

i vote for keeping and protecting doors. they're just nice to have.
but i would ABSOLUTELY make them removable (CK5 write-up)

I have the quick release pins. It's still a pain lifting a door up and f-ing around with pins. Mostly the upper pin that has to be installed upside down. :mad3:
Like 6.2puller said, I looked at the internals of the doors and I can cut up to the lower hinge without loosing the glass. That's a huge plus since I live in new england and it gets extremely cold in the winter. I'm heavily leaning towards that option. Plus I don't think I'd like having to step more than 40" up to get in my rig. :shaking:

Here's a picture of what I did. I would of liked to have gone a little higher but as mentioned I wanted to keep the doors, and the windows functional.

How much of a lip did that add to the floor of your K5? Looks like the bottom of the square tube is level with the bottom of the floor.

There is a small lip, around 1/4-1/2" tall between the square and the floor. But keep in mind that the floor is not original either and I would "guess" sits slightly higher than original, but I didn't take any measurements or anything to compare them. A slightly taller lip would have been nice but I really couldn't move the tube up any higher. I will tell you that the step-in height is noticably higher than stock.
