: Just got back from the Rubicon meeting....
Lance 05-28-2002, 09:43 PM The meeting went well. I was impressed with the representation. Topics included pooping on the trail, bypasses, drunks, law enforcement, etc. I strongly URGE anyone who is interested in the Rubicon's future to begin attending these meetings. There were some key players at this meeting (THE Sherriff of El Do Co, The district Ranger for USFS, Cal Green sticker rep, El Do Co. Parks and Rec Rep, El Do Co District Supervisor, etc). These meetings WILL make a difference!
I have volunteered our site's Bulletin Board as a central information point regarding Rubicon information and issues. I will be adding a "Rubicon Forum" for these issues, and where and where future meetings will occur, etc.
Keith 05-28-2002, 09:50 PM What was their thinking on the poop? Were they suggesting solutions, or just bringing up the issues for future resolution?
FULLSIZE 05-28-2002, 09:53 PM good to hear about the new forum.:D
Lance 05-28-2002, 09:55 PM They LOVED the idea that we actually did a "beta test" this weekend and hauled our poop out. They (being the govt. agencies) believe this is the best solution - for everyone to haul their own poop out. It's just convincing everyone to do so that is the major problem. Honestly it wasn't a big deal at all. Scott hauled all of his poop out in an ammo can (with a plastic bag inside) and was pretty simple and effortless. I will be doing the same next time I go up there.
They are exploring other options for outhouses, leech feilds, composting, etc., but that is all still in future meetings.
Keith 05-28-2002, 10:02 PM Dont they make little toilet seats with the provisions for a bag. Also, is their a dry chemical anyone knows of that may reduce the stank from the bag? I would be for that, sounds to be not huge of a deal. But like you said Lance, getting all to do it is another thing. Hell, we cant even keep folks from making bypasses.

Yeah there's all kinds of stuff out there. River Rafters and other outdoor sportsman have been dealing with this stuff for a long time.
Enviromental Toilet (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jhtml?id=0009548514869a&navAction=jump&navCount=0&indexId=&podId=0009548&catalogCode=IC&parentId=&parentType=)
Keith 05-28-2002, 10:13 PM I dont know about you, but I would rather poop on a enviro toilet and pack it out, instead of getting those damn leg cramps while getting squishy! One slip and packing it out seems super duper great idea.
Explorer 05-28-2002, 10:15 PM I think the bumper dumper is awesome for this. http://www.bumperdumper.com/bumper2.htm Put a bag in a 5 gallon bucket and you're good to go...

I bought one of those. The actual seat part is only $75. bucks and the bags are about a buck fitty each. You don't have to buy the expensive tent thingy. Just hide behind a tree or set up a tarp. :D:D:D
The statistic that got me was that Dana Holland calculated that the rubicon last year saw 35000  people and that there was about 70000 lbs of waste from those people.
FYRMAN 05-29-2002, 12:01 AM The blue stuff that RV people use to mix in their holding tanks will work with a 5 gallon bucket. Just make sure to mix accordingly. 8 ounces is supposed to treat 20 gallons or something like that. It takes care of the smell very well, and it will also help break down the stuff in the bucket so it doesn't fill so fast.
Paul Gagnon 05-29-2002, 02:18 AM My uncle has an outhouse at his cabin. There is some kind of powder that he uses to keep the smell and flies away. Can't remember what it was but it worked very well.
Danger Ranger 05-29-2002, 06:50 AM It was a good meeting and gave me alot to think about. Anyways I volunteered myself to help out with the surveying since it's what i do. :D
Big Rich 05-29-2002, 06:58 AM The white powder might be lime or lye, if anyone decides to use these powders be very careful, their very caustic.
