: using the stock A/C pump for air
420willys 04-22-2007, 05:40 PM i tried it today using the stock A/C pump in my YJ and it worked pretty good. i used the stock line and cut it, i will hook it to a tank this week and see what i am getting for pressure. i took a piece of 1" SCH 40 pipe stuffed it with some foam attached to the suction, soaked it with some 10 wheaght oil and let it run like this. it ran for over 20 minutes and it did'nt over heat or seize. i mean other than keeping up with the oiling and dealing with the oil in the air tank/lines has any body else done it, if so how long did your pump last? what pressures did you get? jason.
SteveZ59 04-22-2007, 06:43 PM I'm running a stock Sanden compresson on my YJ. As far as pressure it is a piston style pump, it will make whatever pressure you let it. I have my pressure switch set to cut out at 150psi. As far as volume, it will put up plenty for all your air needs. Comparing against the electric I was using before I'm figuring mine puts up about 8-9CFM at 2500 RPM's. Plenty to run air tools, fill tires etc. With a 3 gallon tank and the RPM's up at 2500, I've even run a cutoff tool for a trail repair.
The way I have mine setup now I am running 85w140 gear oil in the compressor. I have my oil trap piped back to the case of the compressor through a needle valve. This lets it circulate the oil it blows back to the case of the compressor. There are supposedly some ports you can block inside that will reduce the oil blow by, but I haven't been brave enough to pull mine apart.
Alot of people will tell you to run an inline oiler on the suction. I have had much better success with using gear oil in the case and circulating it back. I originally was using an oiler and discovered that it was starving my pump for suction. When I pulled the oiler and put heavy oil in the case my output volume tripled with the better suction. My compressor also runs much, much cooler than it did with the oiler.
420willys 04-22-2007, 06:48 PM is that sanden compressor the stock looking round one, and if it is do you have a picture of your set-up. i would like to see how you are moving the oil around, jason.

CJim7 04-22-2007, 07:02 PM I also ran the stock Sanden compressor in my CJ for several years. Fed it into a 2 1/2 gal Viar tank. It was a great compressor and i was able to use air tools no problem. As was already mentioned, the compressor will create enough PSI to blow lines and anything else it pressurizes, so you will need to install a 150psi cutoff switch. Some Sandens are internally oiled you can tell by a bolt on the top of the cylinder, i still ran in inline oiler and airtool oil (never got into the recirculating oil trick)
There are several components you need to convert your system over to OBA. Check out onboardair.com for some great info on installation and parts you need. Brad Kilby is most helpfull, but dont buy a kit. You can piece these things together at your local hardware store minus a few components.

thanks for the link, jason.
wranglerwilson 04-23-2007, 07:29 AM I run the AC that came on the 03 4.3 Iswaped in my 95 YJ. I do not use a tank,I use an open chuck that pisses air all the time. the highest pressure the pump sees is the 30-35lbs when i air up tires. Just dont go off and leave the line connected to the tire.
sand dune coon 04-23-2007, 11:03 AM there are tons of write ups on this, search around and try google also,, it looks like a pretty cheap andsimple system..

i did search and found alot of good info, but nothing concrete. i now belive it will work and buy the end of the week i will have it complete and working in my YJ. i just was happy to here form peaple like steveZ59, his insite was great, thanks jason.
CJim7 04-24-2007, 07:54 AM One more thing. When you run your compressor airlines, use braded or sleeved for the output side. The Sanden puts out a lot of heat and you will blow the line off the compressor fitting. The reinforced line will prevent heat expansion at the fitting.
