what is the proper procedure to put these in?

or should I just leave the old ones in?

should I torque the split rings in and then the nut, if so what are the torques needed?

I am working on a dana 30 out of an 86 xj

Search Search Search! :flipoff2: :D

I did you the favor of searching and found this (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54200) which should answer your question. There should have been install instructions with your new balljoints.

Welcome newbie!

Here is the order and spec for a Dana 44 if that helps.
1st Lower nut to 75 ft lbs
2nd split nut to 50 ft lbs
3rd top castle nut to 100 ft lbs
I think it would be the same since 30 outers will go on a 44 and 44 will go on a 30.
I would remove the nut.

You have to loosen and be able to adjust those split rings. Soak em in penetrating oil and buy, borrow or make the socket to rotate them. Use a chisel if necessary to break them loose. You first tighten the lower ball joint stud to spec's, (no split ring, or have it up high) then torque down the split ring to spec to set proper load on the assembly. Last step is to tighten the upper nut.
