what keeps this flange attached to the pinion? or do you just leave it free to slip?

The bottom pic looks like the 404 conversion. I pondered the same thing on my 404 conversion, looks like the same concept. I didnt trust it to just slip since its a sealed deal, so I drilled and tapped the pinion and retained it with a bolt and washer. Pretty hard stuff, but not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Also took off an inch from the pinion length while I was at it ;)

wolfgang where are you?

i dont like the idea of it sliping there. i'd rather it be constrained and let the slip in the driveshaft do its work.

No it is not just slipped! The pinion is drilled, tapped and a bold holds the flange in place! Take a close look at the flange and you will see the bolt hole.
