I am thinking of purchasing a 2001 V6 automatic x-tra cab F150. I will be using it mainly as my DD but I will also want to use it to haul my toyota 4x4 ( 85)

have any of you guys hauled with a v6? and how does it do?

To be honest the v6 has a hard time getting out of its own way. I just bought a f150 with the 5.4L v8 and Im getting 18-22 MPG driving through dallas every day. Im using it to pull a 94 Ford ranger so its about compareable to your truck in weight. I tested the F150 with the 4.6 and it struggled taking off with the tralier on the back.

Mr Johnson,
Like mud said the V6 does have it's limit's. The only v6 I drove was just a regular cab 5 spd truck. It was alright, but I think when you add an automatic, ext. cab, then trailer and rig you'll really be disappointed. I would atleast spring for the 4.6 v8 at the least. You'll still get goood fuel mileage. I gotta an uncle that bought a 5.4 ext cab, loaded 2wd about 6 months ago, he says he averages 17.5 to 18 miles back and forth to work. Something else to ponder. But at the very least get the small v8:p

the V6 deal fell through, I am now working a deal on a 2000 5.4 extended cab automatic. I believe I will be happier with teh V8. From what I have studied, the V^ only gets a couple more miles per gallon than the big V8...

There you go:D Always be safe and go bigger than expected. I think you will be happy overall with this truck. Good luck:p

Glad to hear. The only mod Im doing to mine is a tranny tempature gage. Oh yah some of the 2000 F150's with the 5.4 came in a heavy duty tow package which is a upgraded drivetrain and frame. They also included the tralier brake controller wiring. Wish you luck getting a good tow rig.
