I lost track of the thread where the guy had his automatic transmission from a Tracker modified to a lower stall ratio.

If you're out there..... please advise on how this was done. I have not seen any products on the aftermarket for this on the Suzuki automatics, but am interested in it for my Sidekick.

TIA.

Glenn,

Companies that manufacture torque converters can customize the stall rate. For drag racing, you'd want the transmission to "wait" to take off until the engine was entering it's optimum power band.

By lowering the rpm that a converter enguages, you would defenitely lower the tranny fluid temps, but I'm not sure what other benefits you would get from this? It is the "slipping" feature that makes an auto tranny attractive, as it eases into motion slowly. Lowering the stall speed will lessen this.

ummmm, maybe i'm wrong, but if you lower the stall rpm, wouldn't that make you crawl slower?

Not neccessarily - if you Lower the stall rpm, the torque converter will enguage Sooner, fully enguaging all the energy from the engine to the transmission sooner. This will most likely make your vehicle crawl faster. However, while a t.q. stalls, less power is transmitted so you'll travel slower but with less power.

main reason I lowered my stall is to help in descents with compression braking. I still don't know exactly how its going to run its an experiment. Stock stall in a tracker/sidekick is around 2800 rpm which is high I believe mines around 1800 now.
and you won't find anyone selling these mines custom made.
Can't even find custom parts for these trannies (like shift kits ect)

one thing i do know about the kick/tracker auto is that its a TH-180 GM tranny, that might help in finding aftermarket stuff

Thats what i told the shop but none of the numbers cross referenced up. once i get the sami on the trail we're going to do some more searching around.

The tracker tranny was designed after the th180. It is not a 180. Some of the parts are interchangeable (planataries-good upgrade if you can find them any more) but many are not. They have a 180C .That's why the #'s won't match.

how are these automatics holding up to bigger tires and off-road abuse?

Randy Ellis ran an auto/stock t-case/sammi t-case behind his first RCCA rig. Mike Shaffer's Sniper also ran this combo, never heard of any problems.

my auto's holding up great with 37's a 4/1 case and 4:56 gears. Did lower proving grounds and went to do upper but I need the 6:1 gears.

The 94 two wheel drive tracker I got my tranny bell housing and torq converter from had a T180 in it, at least thats what the tag on the tranny says.
